Jesse James Can't Save Shootout
March 22, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kansas City Outlaws News Release
It's probably fitting that a night devoted to Jesse James should end in a shootout. Unfortunately, the black hats got the drop on the good guys, as the Flint Generals skated to a 2-1 shootout victory over the Kansas City Outlaws tonight at Kemper.
After Friday night's 6-4 Outlaw win over Flint- the second most penalized team in the UHL- fans came to Kemper Arena to claim their limited edition Jesse James bobbleheads, and to witness an expected free-for-all. Despite Flint's reputation as the "Buick City Bullies", the game was mostly fracas free. Only a first period altercation between newly acquired Outlaw Gerry Hickey and Flint's Curtis Tidball at 1:43 raised anybody's blood pressure, and the first intermission arrived with the score a 0-0 tie.
Nobody could score until the 12:13 mark of the second period, when Flint's Leo Thomas picked up his 9th goal and 20th point of the season. Thomas was assisted by Tm Ditzer and Mike Tobin.
The Outlaws were unable to even the score for most of the final frame, but continued to play with heart. As Outlaw fans began looking for their team to pull goalie Maxime Gingras, Kansas City got some help from an unexpected source. Defenseman Matt Suderman scored his first of the year with just 1:53 remaining (Jimmy Callahan, Mike Murray) in the game, and the clock wound down to a shootout.
Both Gingras, who stopped 15 of 16 shots in regulations, and Flint's Nathan Grobins, who kicked away 29 of 30 attempts, continued to shine in the shootout.
Flint's Mike Kinnie managed the first shootout tally in the 4th round, after Jason Ruff, Mark Lee, Joe Seroski and Jimmy Callahan failed to convert for the Outlaws and Thomas, John DiPace and Rob Valicevic did likewise for Flint.
Gingras stuffed former Outlaw Vaclav Zavoral in the 5th round, and the game rested on the shoulders of Kansas City's Andrei Lupandin. Lupandin, acquired in the trade that sent Zavoral to Flint, beat Grobins to tie the shootout and send the contest to sudden death.
The Generals' Jason Selleke scored in the 9th round, and when Mike Murray was unable to answer for Kansas City, Flint had picked up the victory. The official final score is Flint 2, Outlaws 1.
After a day off the Outlaws travel to St. Charles, MO for a Wednesday night game with the Missouri River Otters. They'll also play at Flint and Quad City before returning home one week from tonight for a make-up game with Fort Wayne.
