Smith, who played 11 games with the Coyotes during his first season in the arenafootball2 league, tallied 26 tackles and one fumble recovery.
"It is always a pleasure to see players from our organization move up to the next level," said Coyote general manager Anthony Martinez. "This is an organization that is dedicated to winning football games and advancing the careers of our players. I am always excited to see one of our players get an opportunity to showcase his talents at a higher level."
Smith caught the eye of the Coyote coaching staff at an open tryout after a productive senior year at the University of Washington where he recorded 52 tackles, four pass deflections, three interceptions and a sack in 10 games.

With the signing, Smith becomes the fourth player in franchise history and first Coyote to sign an AFL contract.
