Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, November 19, 2008 - The calendar may only read November, but the Portland LumberJax expect the second weekend of Training Camp to feel like January. The Jax will practice from 7-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. this Saturday, November 22nd at Indoor Goals in Beaverton. After spending the first weekend of camp getting acclimated and shaking the initial rust, the second weekend of camp is all about how players react in game situations.
"Last weekend we spent half of our sessions getting the rust out of the sticks and getting a good run in," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "This weekend, everything will be done with a purpose as we emphasize game situations."
Defenseman Brodie Merrill will make his debut after missing the first weekend of camp. A three-time All-Star, Merrill brings a competitive spirit that makes everyone around him better.
"Brodie instantly helps the intensity level," said Keenan. "Brodie brings intensity to a whole different stratosphere and when your best player comes in and does that, you'd better follow."
Keenan and his staff also plan to trim Portland's roster by the end of the weekend, making camp even more competitive.
"By the end of this weekend we expect to have our team picked or at least down to no more than 26 players," said Keenan.
