Jax Finish Homestand With Mammoth

January 6, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, January 6, 2009 - Six days after raising their 2008 West Division Champions banner, the Portland LumberJax (0-1) finish their two game homestand by hosting the Colorado Mammoth at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 9th at the Rose Garden Arena. This is the first of three regular season meetings between the two heated rivals. Colorado leads the series history 5-3.

When these two clubs meet, chances are the game will be decided by two goals or less. In fact, of the eight meetings all-time, five have been determined by two goals or less. The most recent being last March when the Jax beat the Mammoth 16-15 in Portland.

In that game, forward Derek Malawsky tied a franchise-high with seven assists and forward Peter Jacobs buried the game winner with just over a minute left in regulation. The calendar only read March 20th at the time, but the game had the look and feel of a National Lacrosse League playoff game.

This is the first game of the 2009 season for the Mammoth. Colorado finished last season 9-7 and was a first round exit as the Mammoth fell to the Calgary Roughnecks 15-13 in the West Division Semifinals.

Colorado is led by forward Gavin Prout, who led the league in assists last season with 67. The Mammoth also have one of the top goalies in the league in Gee Nash, who was 7-4 in 2008 and allowed just under 10.5 goals-per-game.

Also making significant contributions for the Mammoth have been forwards Jamie Shewchuk and Brian Langtry. Shewchuk was second on the Mammoth with 64 points (26 goals, 38 assists) and Langtry was third on the team with 63 points (30 goals, 33 assists). Overall, Colorado had five players score 40 points or more during its 9-7 regular season.

Despite the success in '08, Colorado's bugaboo was its inability to win on the road. The Mammoth were only 3-5 away from the Pepsi Center, including the March 20th defeat in Portland. Since 2005 Colorado is only 15-17 outside the Rocky Mountain state.

In its first defeat of the season last week, Portland forwards Dan Stroup and Peter Morgan led the way with two goals each. Morgan's two goals increased his career total to 61 with the Jax.

Forward Cory Conway tied a career-high with three assists and rookie forward Tim Campeau scored the first goal of his young career.

Forward Scott Stewart added a goal and assist and goalie Matt Disher made 32 saves in the 11-7 loss.

The 2009 season is still young, which gives the Jax ample opportunities for redemption starting Friday.
