PORTLAND, April 17, 2009 - The Portland LumberJax finished the regular season Friday night, falling 12-9 to the Calgary Roughnecks in front of 7,855 at the Rose Garden Arena. Forward Ryan Powell scored one goal and added two assists and defenseman Brodie Merrill added an assist and collected nine loose balls. Powell finished the season with a career-high 44 assists and Merrill collected a career-high 216 loose balls this season.
The Jax (9-7) host the San Jose Stealth in a West Division Semifinal on Friday, May 1st at 7:30 p.m. at the Rose Garden Arena. Portland scored first as Powell scored off passes from forwards Cory Conway (1 goal, 2 assists) and Derek Malawsky (1 goal, 2 assists) with 9:32 left in the first quarter. After a Calgary (12-4) goal, the Jax took a 2-1 lead as forward Peter Morgan (2 goals, 1 assist) scored with 4:18 left in the quarter. Cutting through the Calgary defense, Morgan took a pass from Conway and beat Roughneck goalie Matt King.
Portland's scoring would end there as the Roughnecks scored the final seven goals of the half to take an 8-2 lead into the break.
The Jax ended their near 20-minute scoring drought 17-seconds into the third quarter as forward Scott Stewart (1 goal, 1 assist) scored in transition to make it 8-3. Portland then cut the lead to 8-4 with 9:13 left in the third quarter as forward Peter Jacobs scored off passes from defenseman Richard Morgan (1 goal, 1 assist) and forward Tim Campeau (1 goal, 1 assist).
A Calgary goal would stop the run before Portland closed on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter. P. Morgan scored on the power play with 3:55 left before R. Morgan scored off the ensueing face-off 12-seconds later. Then, Conway scored with one minute left to make it 9-7 after three quarters of play.
After two quick Calgary goals, Portland followed with its own 2-0 run. Campeau scored with 10:43 left and then Malawsky scored 40-seconds later to cut the lead to 11-9.
The Roughnecks would add a late goal to pull out the 12-9 victory.
Goalie Matt Flindell stopped 41 of the 53 shots he faced.
Notes: Malawsky has scored 50+ points in 10 straight seasons...The Jax set a franchise-high with 280 assists this season...Portland matched a franchise-low by allowing 177 goals this season...Merrill also tied a career-high with 33 assists this season...Stewart collected a career-high 98 loose balls this season.
