Janeth Arcain to Return to Comets for 2005

HOUSTON â The Houston Comets announced today that guard/forward Janeth Arcain has re-signed with the team and is expected to return to play with the Comets in 2005. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Janeth has played a big part in the Comets success and helping us win four championships," said Comets Head Coach and General Manager Van Chancellor. "We really missed her last season and I look forward to having her back this year."
Arcain (5-11, Brazil), who elected to remain in Brazil for the 2004 WNBA season to play with the Brazilian National Team, participated this past summer in her fourth Olympic Games (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004) as a member of the Brazilian Olympic Team. Overall, she finished as the fourth-leading scorer (18.0 ppg) in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

As a member of the Comets, Arcain is the only player in team history to play in every game from 1997-2003 (220 consecutive games). She has started a total of 162 games in seven seasons, including an active streak of 130 consecutive starts. Arcain holds career averages of 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists with Houston. The 2001 WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year ranks fourth in Comets history in scoring average (10.5), second in total steals (292), and is third in total assists (416) and total rebounds (826). Arcain, who was voted as a starter to the 2001 WNBA All-Star Game, shares the distinction with Tina Thompson as the only Comets players to have participated in every playoff game in team history.
Arcain has played in her native Brazil with FIO/Pão de Açucar/Unimed/Ourinhos for the past two offseasons. She led Ourinhos to the 7th Brazilian National Championship of Women's Basketball in 2004, earning Championship MVP after scoring 29 points in the series-clinching win over Unimed/Americana.
