Dawn Staley named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year

Charlotte Sting point guard and Temple University women's basketball coach Dawn Staley was named the 2005 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, it was announced earlier this week at the conference's annual awards banquet. It marks the second consecutive year that Staley has been honored with the award, having previously been named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2004.
Behind Staley's leadership this season, the Temple Owls have compiled a 24-3 overall record and garnered their first-ever national ranking (#16). Currently in the midst a 21-game winning streak, the Owls went undefeated (16-0) in conference play to capture the A-10 Championship. The Owls begin play in the A-10 Conference Tournament tomorrow afternoon against the winner of St. Joseph's/LaSalle.
Now in her fifth year as Temple's head coach, Staley has amassed a career coaching mark of 98-50 (.662), leading the Owls to the A-10 Tournament Title and an NCAA berth in both 2002 and 2004.
A three-time WNBA All-Star, Staley will resume her playing duties for the Sting later this Spring. A six-year veteran of the league, Staley has averaged 9.6 points and 5.4 assists over 196 career games.
In 2004, Staley led Team USA to its third consecutive Olympic gold medal last August in Athens, Greece. She was also elected as the U. S. delegation's flag bearer for the opening ceremony and was named USA Basketball's Female Athlete of the Year.
