NEW YORK, AUGUST 1 - Janell Burse of the Seattle Storm was named the WNBA Player of the Week for her role in Seattle's two victories last week. It is the first WNBA Player of the Week honor for Burse.
Burse, in her second season with Seattle and fifth in the WNBA, scored a career-high 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting and collected six rebounds in the Storm's 79-68 victory over Charlotte on July 29. Burse's previous career-high was 21, which she scored on two occasions (June 2, 2005 at Phoenix and July 25, 2003 vs. San Antonio). Two nights later in a 77-72 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks, Burse pulled down nine rebounds, seven of them offensive, and posted 13 points in 30 minutes of game action. In the victory, the Storm tied a franchise record with its sixth consecutive win. The previous six-win streak occurred June 3-19, 2004.
Burse is currently ranked seventh in the WNBA in field-goal percentage (.511), 10th in blocked shots (1.17) and 14th in rebounding (6.0).
Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Connecticut's Nykesha Sales, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, New York's Ann Wauters, Sacramento's Rebekkah Brunson, San Antonio's Shannon Johnson and Washington's Alana Beard.
The WNBA tipped off its ninth season on Saturday, May 21, 2005 under the leadership of new President Donna Orender. The 2005 WNBA All-Star Game, which was played in front of a sellout crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena, saw the highest scoring game in WNBA history and culminated with a slam dunk by veteran All-Star Lisa Leslie.
