Jamieson to Lead Iroquois into Bowhunter Cup
October 9, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
Iroquois Nationals General Manager Gewas Schindler announced the team's roster today for the Fourth Annual Bowhunter Cup. The game, which is being presented by Arrow Express Sports, is set for Saturday, October 12th at 8:00 p.m. at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. General admission tickets are $10 at the door.
Back-to-back National Lacrosse League Championship Game MVP Cody Jamieson of the Rochester Knighthawks will lead the Iroquois into the exhibition contest against the USIL's Developmental Team. He is gunning for his fourth Cup of 2013, having captured the NLL Champion's Cup, the Mann Cup and the Nations Cup.
Jamieson will have a great supporting cast this Saturday. The roster includes fellow Knighthawks Sid Smith, Johnny Powless, Craig Point and Angus Goodleaf. The Iroquois team also features NLL stars like Jeremy Thompson (Edmonton), Alex "Kedoh" Hill (Buffalo), Dean Hill (Vancouver) and Roger Vyse (Toronto).
The exhibition game will help prepare the Iroquois team for the 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, which they will host for the first time in the tournament's history.
"It's important any time we can get our team together and get accustomed to each other. We are fortunate that we get to play together a lot more than other teams," said Jamieson. "It's about getting better and learning each other's tendencies."
The Bowhunter Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the game between the Iroquois Nationals and an American squad, is named for Curt Styres' sons, Wake:Riat "Bow" Bowhunter and Rato:Rats "Hunter" Bowhunter. Styres is the owner and general manager of the Rochester Knighthawks.
The Iroquois are 3-0 all-time against the U.S. in World Indoor Championship competition, and have won two of the three Bowhunter Cup exhibitions. In last year's game, the Iroquois edged the USA all-stars, 12-10 at The Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. Jamieson was crowned the Player of the Game, as he finished with a team-high three goals as part of a four-point performance. Point and Powless also contributed to the Iroquois' offense. Point scored a goal and led the Nationals with three assists, while Powless added a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the fourth.
"It's my second year playing. It's always a huge privilege and an honor to put on an Iroquois jersey," said Point. "It's more exciting that it's on home territory as well."
The fourth installment of the Bowhunter Cup will take place at the ILA, which will mark the first time the game has been played on indigenous land. The arena serves as the training facility for the back-to-back National Lacrosse League Champion Rochester Knighthawks, and is the home floor of the Junior "A" Six Nations Arrows. Arrows and Knighthawks star Johnny Powless cannot wait to hit his "home" turf this weekend.
"I'm very honored to be playing for Team Iroquois in the Bowhunter Cup," said Powless. "I am looking forward to playing this Saturday."
