James A. Lane honored as Hero Among Us

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 21, 2002 – Longtime Boys and Girls Club mentor James A. Lane has been selected by the Huntsville Flight to receive a special "Heroes Among Us" award. Lane will be honored at the end of the first quarter of Friday's Huntsville Flight game against the Mobile Revelers at 7 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.

A World War II veteran, Lane has been active in many civic and charitable organizations. Lane has spent more than 35 years working with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Huntsville. During that time, Lane has served as board president, formed the Youth Achievement Committee and produced the Learning Center, a place where members could retreat and work on their studies, learn computer skills and enhance their academic experiences.

A native of Alabama, Lane attended high school in Evergreen, Ala., where he earned 16 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He went on to play five years with a minor league baseball team of the Washington Senators as an infielder-outfielder.

Lane, the youngest man ever to command the Department of Alabama's American Legion, also provided Huntsville with its first professional football franchise, the Alabama Hawks

The "Heroes Among Us" award is presented by the NBDL to individual(s) who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the local community. Award winners are selected based on recommendations from local community leaders, local news stories and recommendations by the Flight's 3-Point Leadership Council.

The National Basketball Development League tipped off its inaugural season on November 16, 2001. The Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.) will compete in a 56-game regular season schedule that runs from mid-November through March, followed by playoffs. A total of 24 games will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPN2.
