East Texas PumpJacks News Release
The East Texas Pump Jacks ended the weekend on a high note with an 8-3 victory over the Victoria Generals Sunday night at Historic Driller Park. The Pump Jacks notched their eight runs on eight hits, including a three-run fifth, and a four-run sixth, and used eight stolen bases to pull away from the Generals.
Connor Huesers led the way with three RBI, and Mitch Meyer and Mark Mathias each picked up two RBI on two hits. Joey Armstrong reached base successfully in all five of his plate appearances and stole two bases. The Pump Jacks were never caught stealing, nabbing the eight stolen bases in eight attempts. The Generals, on the other hand, didn't fare as well on the basepaths. Though Victoria leads the league in stolen bases, Jacks catcher Nate Esposito threw out three Generals attempting to steal.
The Pump Jacks broke onto the board in the third inning. Meyer sparked the offense with a broken bat single to center, and moved to third on a double ripped to left by Armstrong. Huesers grounded into a fielder's but Meyer read the play well and scooted home for the first run of the game.
The Generals took the lead away with three runs in the fifth inning, but the Jacks answered quickly with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning.
In the fifth, Armstrong worked a one-out walk, and Huesers scorched a ground ball past a diving Generals third basemen for a double, bringing home Armstrong for the first run of the inning. After Beau Day was hit by a pitch, Mathias came through with the big hit, a double to right center, scoring Huesers and Day to give the Jacks a 4-3 advantage.
The offense rolled on in the sixth, tallying four more runs to take the commanding 8-3 lead. The inning opened with Esposito taking first after he was hit in the back by a pitch, and Bret McAfee reached on an error by Drew Featherston at second. Meyer picked up two RBI with a triple to right-center, his first of the season. Armstrong was hit by a pitch, the fourth of the night, and then Huesers knocked a fly ball to center, deep enough to score Meyer. Day drove in the final run of the game with a groundout, pushing the final margin to 8-3.
Riley Toler had another solid start for the Jacks to pick up his second win in a row. In five innings pitched, Toler allowed three runs (one earned), on five hits and two walks while fanning two. J.J. Franklin relieved Toler and pitched two scoreless innings with one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts. Don Sullivan pitched a 1-2-3 eighth on nine pitches before giving way to Ben Mordini for the ninth. After hitting back-to-back batters to start the inning, Mordini departed and Kenny Oakley came on to finish. Oakley was able to work out of the jam, retiring the next three batters in order with two strikeouts to end the game.
After having Monday off, the home games continue as the Jacks welcome the Brazos Valley Bombers for a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday is Family Night presented by the Longview News-Journal. Fans can get four grandstand tickets for just ten dollars, or four tickets and four meals for the low cost of twenty-five dollars.
