Jacks Complete Sweep against Marshals

July 1, 2013 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

The Pump Jacks earned their third series sweep with an 8-1 stomping of the Texas Marshals on Sunday night.

After an exciting win in 12 innings just a day ago, the East Texas Pump Jacks momentum continued as they pulled away with the series sweep of the Texas Marshals thanks to an 8-1 win on Sunday night.

The Pump Jacks offense rolled over the Marshals pitching staff, recording 14 hits to collect their third win in a row. Connor Huesers, Wes Edrington, and Mitch Meyer all tallied three hits on the night, and combined for five of the eight RBIs.

The Pump Jacks opened the scoring in the top of the fourth. Huesers led off the frame with a double to left center, and crossed home for the first run of the game on a single from Meyer. Then, in his Pump Jack debut, Nate Esposito hooked an opposite-field double, down the right field line, to score Meyer and put the Jacks ahead 2-0.

In the fifth the Jacks tallied another run to widen the gap. Edrington scorched a single up the middle and then stole second, for his fourth stolen base of the season. Huesers chipped in his second hit on the night, a single to right to drive home Edrington from second.

The Marshals answered back in the home half of the inning to get their only run of the game. With two outs and a runner on second, Jared Pruett knocked a broken bat double that bounced just fair to score the lone run.

The Pump Jacks added some late inning insurance, tallying four runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to pull away from the Marshals.

In the eighth, Huesers opened with an infield single, and then stole second. Meyer then blasted his third home run of the season over the wall in right to bring drive home Huesers and give the Jacks a 5-1 lead.

The Pump Jack bats were not done yet. Mark Mathias continued the inning, slicing a single into left, and both Beau Day and Ryan Hope worked full count walks to load the bases. Edrington came through in the clutch again with a single through the hole in left to drive home Mathias, and Devon Conley grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home Day.

In the eighth Brooks Marlow and Meyer contributed back-to-back singles. Day then earned his first RBI as a Pump Jack with a single right up the middle to plate a run and give East Texas the ball game, 8-1.

Riley Toler had a solid showing on the mound for the Jacks, pitching 5.1 innings for his longest outing of the season thus far. Toler earned his first win while only allowing one run on four hits and striking out four. Don Sullivan pitched 1.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts, both of which were the final out of the inning to strand runners in scoring position. Jordan Johnson pitched the final two innings in the game, tossing only 20 pitches, and recording one strikeout.

After a day off on Monday, East Texas returns home to Driller to close out the first half of the season with a two-game series against the Victoria Generals Tuesday and Wednesday.
