JackHammers swept Tuesday night

GARY, IN-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (39-33) swept a doubleheader against the Joliet JackHammers (33-38) on Tuesday, winning 11-3 in the continuation of game one of a suspended game from Monday before coming back to win 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two before 2, 472 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Tuesday night.

Game one resumed in the top of the fifth inning with a 1-0 count on Juan Diaz (0-3) and RailCats right-hander Brian Halford resuming the game started by Tony Cogan on Monday night. The JackHammers inherited a 7-2 deficit that was quickly cut down to four runs when Cory Harris (1-3) hit a two-out single to score McIntyre. The JackHammers trailed 7-3.

The run was charged to Gary starter Cogan, who pitched four innings and surrendered an unearned run in the second inning on a throwing error. He allowed two runs, (one earned), on two while walking five.

The RailCats scored a run in the fifth inning against RHP Sam Cunningham. Cunningham, who relived Matt Jernstad in the third inning last night, took the mound to continue his outing for the JackHammers. He pitched two innings on Monday and two innings on Tuesday in the continuation of the game on Tuesday. He surrendered a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Steve Haake (2-3). The RailCats took an 8-3 lead.

Jernstad pitched two innings and allowed seven runs to suffer the loss.

Gary scored three runs in the seventh inning to seal an 11-3 victory.

In game two of the doubleheader, the JackHammers scored a run in the second inning. Joey Gomes (2-3) hit a one-out double and moved to third base on a single by Chris Kinsey (1-3).

The relief pitcher got a start at first base for the JackHammers. He was a college infielder at Sacramento State University. Nick Prosise (2-3) hit an RBI single to score Gomes and give the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the JackHammers scored two more runs on a two-run home run by Prosise. Gomes led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by Gary 3B Tanner Townsend. Prosise came to the plate and pulled a pitch from Gary starter Jeremy Plexico over the left field wall for a 3-0 JackHammers lead.

The RailCats scored a single run in the fifth inning against Joliet right-handed starter Vince Perkins. The JackHammers lead was whittled down to two runs at 3-1.

In the sixth inning, Gomes absolutely crushed a pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run. He gave the JackHammers a 4-1 lead.

Gary pushed across two runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Rob Marconi (1-3). The JackHammers led 4-3 heading into the seventh inning.

Perkins lasted five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs, (two earned runs), on seven hits. He struck out four to get a "no-decision" for the JackHammers.

In the seventh inning, Jay Pecci led off with a double against Chad Fillinger. Tanner Townsend (0-3) struck out and Christian Guerrero (1-4) reached first base on a throwing error by Joliet 1B Chris Kinsey. Pecci scored to tie the game at 4-4. Steve Haake (1-4) followed with a RBI double to left field to score Guerrero from first and give the RailCats a 5-4 win.

Loose Gravel: Tuesday's game two was not the first time that Chris Kinsey saw action at the plate for the JackHammers. He pinch-hit on August 3 against Fargo-Moorhead at Silver Cross Field and went 1-1 with a double.

The JackHammers and RailCats finish their series on Wednesday night with a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. The two clubs will play a pair of seven-inning games.
