JackHammers Snap Losing Streak

JOLIET, IL-1B Freddie Thon (1-4) and RF Joe Gaetti (1-3) each hit three-run doubles to help the Joliet JackHammers (25-45) win 10-6 over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (37-30) before 2,206 fans at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night. The JackHammers snapped a season-high 7-game losing streak with the victory.

The RedHawks opened the scoring with two runs in the 1st inning against JackHammers RHP Nate Sevier (1-1). LF Mike Coles (0-4), SS Zach Penprase (0-3) and CF Nic Jackson (2-4) all reached base on walks. 3B Ruben Salazar (0-5) struck out and Coles scored on a wild pitch.

DH Randall Simon (1-4) grounded out to score Penprase for a 2-0 Fargo-Moorhead lead.

Joliet started it's scoring with a four-run 3rd inning against Fargo-Moorhead RHP Garry Bakker (4-5). C Tug Gillingham (1-2) walked and went to second base on a single by CF Adam Klein (3-5).

3B Vince Harrison (1-3) singled to score Gillingham for Joliet's first run of the game.

After LF Brad Correll (1-4) lined out, Gaetti reached base on a walk to load the bases.

Thon hit a bases-clearing double to give Joliet a 4-2 lead.

The RedHawks scored a run on an RBI double from C Alan Rick (1-2) in the 4th inning to score Simon and get Fargo-Moorhead close to the lead at 4-3.

The JackHammers loaded the bases again in the 4th inning. Gillingham and SS Kevin Rios (0-3) reached base on back-to-back walks. Klein singled to load the bases.

Correll worked a bases-loaded walk to score Gillingham for a 5-3 Joliet lead.

Gaetti came to the plate and ripped a bases-clearing double to give Joliet an 8-3 lead.

The JackHammers' two-run 5th inning came courtesy of some aggressive base running. DH Kyle Nichols (0-3) worked a walk and was retired as part of a fielder's choice hit into by 2B Wally Backman, Jr. (0-4) Gillingham singled Backman, Jr. to second base. Rios lined out to right field and allowed Backman, Jr. to tag up and advance from second to third base.

Gillingham stole second base and drew an errant throw from Fargo-Moorhead C Jeff Stevens to allow Backman, Jr. to score. Klein hit a single to plate Gillingham for a 10-3 lead.

A solo home run by LF Justin Justice (1-4) in the 7th inning brought the RedHawks within six runs at 10-4.

The RedHawks scored two runs in the 9th inning off of RHP Luke O'Loughlin before RHP Drew Shetrone came into the game for the JackHammers and recorded the final two outs.

Sevier got his first win in a Joliet uniform in 2009. He allowed three runs on three hits, while walking four men and striking out seven.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers recorded 14 strikeouts on Sunday. That means everyone at the ballpark can take their ticket stub to any one of the three Texas Roadhouse locations in the area (Joliet, Tinley Park and Naperville) and exchange their ticket stub for a free baby blossom appetizer.

The JackHammers head to the road to start a three-game series at CanWest Park against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. RHP Rory Shortell (3-4, 4.50) gets the start for the JackHammers. The Goldeyes have yet to announce a starting pitcher.
