Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-For the second time in three days, Winnipeg put a crooked number on the scoreboard in one inning. Today, it was a five-spot in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a Cody Ehlers three-run home run, and the Goldeyes defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 8-3 on Sunday at Alexian.
Winnipeg got on the board in the top of the first off Flyers starter Jason Richardson. Kevin West hit his 17th home run of the season-a two-run shot to left center-giving the Goldeyes the early 2-0 lead.
The Flyers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Travis Brown singled and Victor Ferrante walked, bringing up Jeff Dunbar. Dunbar hit a grounder to pitcher Ace Walker who forced out Ferrante at second, but the Goldeyes could not complete the double-play, and with no one covering home, Brown hustled in for the first Flyers run.
Juan Diaz hit his 19th home run of the season, a solo line drive in the top of the fifth, giving Winnipeg a 3-1 lead.
The floodgates opened for the Goldeyes in the top of the sixth. Richardson allowed Brent Metheny to reach base and was relieved by Dunbar. Dee Brown hit a double, and then Cody Ehlers then hit a three-run homer off Dunbar, his sixth of the year. After a few more Goldeyes reached base, Juan Diaz hit an RBI single and Kevin West followed with an RBI double. The five-run sixth gave Winnipeg a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Flyers rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Dunbar singled and scored on a double to the gap in right-center by Mercado. Tony Mansolino then drove Mercado home with a single that hit second base, collecting his fourth RBI of the series. The Flyers loaded the bases, but Brown grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the threat.
That was the last rally the Flyers would make as they fell to Winnipeg in the rubber match 8-3. Richardson falls to 1-1 after going five innings, giving up four runs and striking out six. Walker continues to excel in the Northern League, picking up his ninth victory (9-3) after going 6.1 innings, giving up three runs and striking out three. Dunbar went 3-4, extending his home-hit streak to 15 games. West led the Goldeyes by going 3-5 with a home run and three driven in.
The Flyers fall to 31-38 on the season, while the first place Goldeyes improve to 43-25. Schaumburg begins a seven-game road trip with four in Gary starting tomorrow night at 7:00. RHP Dustin Glant (5-4, 4.53) will get the nod for the Flyers against RHP Derell McCall (2-0, 3.27) for Gary. You can listen to all the away games this week on flyersbaseball.com.
