Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet JackHammers (13-13) scored three runs in the fourth to erase a 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-2 victory in six innings Friday night over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-11) in front of 4,028 fans at Silver Cross Field.

The JackHammers received back-to-back home runs from Freddie Thon and Kevin Rios to tie the game in the fourth. Jon Nelson was then hit by a Ace Walker (2-2) pitch and scored on a Justin Justice doubled to put the Hammers out in front for good at 3-2.

Winnipeg captured an early 2-0 lead with single tallies in the second and third frames off Devin Anderson (1-1). Dee Brown slapped an RBI single in the second, scoring Kevin West. Luis Alen led off the third with a double and would score on a great catch by Justice in left field. The JackHammer left fielder crashed into the wall, robbing Wes Long of extra bases, and then threw the ball away allowing Alen to tag and score all the way from second base.

Joliet picked up an insurance run before the rain in the sixth inning. Nelson walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Brett Wallace. Justice was intentionally walked and Joe Billick laid down a bunt to plate Nelson for the 4-2 final.

Anderson earned his first victory of the season, tossing 5.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. The lefty would leave the game with tightness in the left arm, allowing Michael Rocco to record the final out for his first save of the season.

Walker was tagged with the loss, tossing all six innings. The Winnipeg ace surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes continue their three game set tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field. Antony Bello (1-2) will go up against Rory Shortell (1-3). First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
