JackHammers Offer to House Gauntanamo Detainees

November 16, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet JackHammers have announced that the team is throwing their name in the hat as potential host for the Gitmo Detainees. Federal authorities have announced plans to relocate the Guantanamo Bay detainees to a location inside the continental United States. The JackHammers will compete against Thomson, Illinois, Hardin, Montana, Standish, Michigan, Florence, Colorado, and Marion, Illinois as potential suitors for the detainees.

Illinois state officials have predicted that the relocation of the detainees could pump up to $250 million into the host community on an annual basis, and generate up to 3,000 jobs. A former deputy assistant defense secretary, Charles Stimson, has suggested that the government could spend as much as $200 million in facility upgrades and offer approximately $100 million a year in a facility operating budget.

"Based on some of the raw projections, we feel like we could very well serve as a potential host to the detainees," states JackHammers' General Manager Jamie Toole. "The $200 million in facility upgrades would certainly help with a few of the HVAC issues we are currently battling and the extra $100 million on the operating side of things would give us a shot at landing a few marquee free agents heading in to the 2010 season."

LOOSE GRAVEL: Don't miss the "Block Wednesday" Street Party on November 25th. There will be food, beer, soda, and wine for sale. Other events will include a Bean Bag and Stick Ball Tourney along with a bonfire, a pie eating contest, 50/50 raffles, silent auction, ProShop Sale, hayrides and a bat burning with a blessing for 2010. For everyone's entertainment a DJ will be playing some tunes and for a small donation you can even catch a glimpse of a "Man Eating Turkey."

Tickets for this event can be purchased by stopping by the JackHammers office Monday-Friday from 9:00-5:30 or by purchasing them over the phone on a credit card.

Season tickets, group outings, and suites are available now. To take advantage of November's "Turkey & Tickets" specials, contact the JackHammers Ticket Department at 815.726.BALL (2255).
