JackHammers hold on for close victory

JOLIET, IL- The Joliet JackHammers finished off their eight-game home stand with a walk-off single from 3B Wally Backman, Jr. in the ninth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and give Joliet a 3-2 win over Fargo-Moorhead before 2,750 fans at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night. The JackHammers take to the road to start a three-game series with Kansas City on Friday night.

The JackHammers scored one run in the fifth inning against David Morgan. Morgan, who came into the game in the third inning to relieve RedHawks starting pitcher Garry Bakker after Bakker was taken out of the game with an undisclosed injury, hit Mike Caruso (0-3) with a pitch. Nick McIntyre (1-4) was hit by a pitch and Doc Brooks (0-2) walked to load the bases. Cory Harris (0-4) worked a bases-loaded walk to score Harris and make it 1-0 Joliet.

The RedHawks scored two runs in the sixth inning against Joliet starting pitcher Nate Sevier. Boomer Berry (2-4) led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-run home run by Alan Rick (2-3) to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.

Joliet tied the game in the eighth inning when Freddie Thon (2-5) hit a double with one-out in the inning. Backman, Jr. worked a walk and Joe Hooft (1-4) grounded out to advance both base runners into scoring position. After Nick Prosise (0-3) walked to load the bases, Caruso worked a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2.

In the ninth, Joey Gomes (0-3) walked and was lifted from the game for pinch-runner Dorian Rojas (0-0). Thon struck out but advanced to first base on a past ball assessed to RedHawks catcher Alan Rick. Backman, Jr. lifted a fly ball to shallow center field to score Rojas for the winning run.

Loose Gravel: Caruso was not the only newcomer to make his Joliet debut on Thursday. Chad Fillinger (1-0), who was signed to a contract on Tuesday, pitched a scoreless inning of relief to pick up his first victory in a JackHammers uniform.

The JackHammers now travel to Kansas City to take on the T-Bones in game one of a three-game series beginning on Friday night. LHP Brian Forystek (2-2, 3.79) will get the ball for the JackHammers against RHP Anthony Snow (0-1, 5.40) for the T-Bones.
