
JackHammers falter in extras

JOLIET, IL-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (50-31) scored a single run in the 10th inning on a solo home run by Jeff Eure (1-4) to beat the Joliet JackHammers 3-2 before 4,011 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night.
The RedHawks scored a single run in the first inning against in Joliet starting pitcher Aaron Trolia. Joe Mathis (1-5) led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlo Cota (0-4) for a 1-0 RedHawks lead.
The JackHammers tied the game with a single run in the first inning. Juan Diaz (2-3) hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second inning, the RedHawks scored a run when leadoff man Jeremiah Piepkorn (2-5) singled and stole second base. Steve Mortimer (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Piepkorn for a 2-1 RedHawks lead.
The JackHammers scored a single run in the fifth inning. Mike Garcia (0-1) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a single by Joe Hooft (1-3). Steve Garrabrants (1-5) hit an RBI double to score Garcia for a 2-2 tied score.
The game remained tied until the 10th inning when Eure smacked a solo home run over the left field wall off of Joliet RHP Chad Fillinger (3-4) for a 3-2 RedHawks lead in a game they ended up winning by the same margin.
Trolia started the game for the JackHammers and worked six innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out six. Fillinger suffered the loss by allowing one run in his two and one-thirds innings pitched.
The JackHammers continue their three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night. RHP Vince Perkins (1-0, 1.62) will start the game for Joliet against RHP Todd George (5-1, 5.30) Pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
