FARGO, ND-The Joliet JackHammers (17-29) scored four runs in the 5th inning to break a 2-2 tie and take a lead they held on to for a 7-4 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (20-21) before 5,046 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday night.
The JackHammers scored a single run without the benefit of a hit in the 1st inning against RedHawks RHP Nick Fellman (2-4). CF Adam Klein (1-3) walked and stole second base. A grounded out to short stop by Joliet SS Kevin Rios (2-5) pushed Klein to third base. LF Brad Correll (1-4) hit an RBI groundout to score Klein for a 1-0 Joliet lead.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks scored a run in the 1st inning to tie the game at 1-1. After RF Mike Coles (1-5) led off the inning by grounding out, SS Zach Penprase (2-4) hit a single. He scored on a double by CF Nic Jackson (2-4) for a tied score.
The RedHawks took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning when LF Justin Justice (2-3) smacked a solo home run over the right field wall.
The JackHammers tied the game in the 4th inning. Rios led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a balk. Correll grounded out to move Rios to third base. 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-3) lined out to center field to score Rios for a 2-2 tied score.
Joliet's offense exploded for four runs in the 5th inning to take a 6-2 lead. 1B Freddie Thon (1-4) led off the inning by popping out. RF Wally Backman, Jr. (0-3) worked a walk and scored on a double by C Phil Avlas (2-4). 2B Gary Harris (1-4) singled home Avlas from second base for a 4-2 lead.
Klein reached base on a fielder's choice that retired Harris at second base. Rios smacked a double to move Klein to third base. Correll hit a two-run double to score both Klein and Rios and make it 6-2.
Fargo-Moorhead came back with two runs in the 6th inning to get within two runs at 6-4. Jackson led off the inning with a single and moved to third base on a double by 1B Jeremiah Piepkorn (2-3).
DH Tony Richards (0-4) hit a groundout that allowed Jackson to score and Justice hit a single to score Piepkorn.
The JackHammers added a run of insurance in the 9th inning when C Phil Avlas (2-4) smacked a solo home run over the left field wall for a 7-4 Joliet lead.
Gehring went seven innings and allowed four runs on nine hits to pick up the win. RHP Chad Blackwell worked two scoreless innings for his 3rd save of the year.
