Fox Launches T-Bones to Rout
July 3, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-Kansas City T-Bones catcher Ryan Fox put on plenty of fireworks before the post-game fireworks as the T-Bones beat the Flyers 10-3 in front of a season-high 6,875 fans.
Fox began his day with a three-run home run off Flyers starter Carmen Pignatiello in a four-run first inning, the fourth straight game that Kansas City has scored in the first frame against the Flyers.
The Flyers answered immediately in the bottom of the first as Travis Ezi cranked his first home run as a Flyer over the left field fence to cut the lead to 4-1.
But Fox was far from finished as he crushed a solo shot, his second homer of the game, in the top of the third inning.
Jose Valdez did his part to keep Schaumburg in the game. After missing the series in Winnipeg, Valdez extended his hit streak to 12 games with a single in the first, and then a triple to right center in the fourth. When the T-Bones attempted to nail Valdez at third, the ball trickled into the KC dugout, and Valdez trotted home making the score 5-2.
The T-Bones would get one run off reliever Kris Jiggitts in the 6th, but were otherwise shut down until the top of the ninth.
The Flyers looked to rally in the bottom of the eighth, but that was halted by a very questionable call. With two on, Jeff Dunbar grounded to short where the T-Bones forced Stephen Yoo at second to end the inning on an extremely close play. An ensuing argument ended with manager Mike Busch getting ejected. It's the second consecutive home game Busch has been tossed from.
In the top of the ninth, the T-Bones had already scratched one run across when Ryan Fox came back to torture another Flyers pitcher-this time Jim Popp. Fox demolished his third home run of the game off the Miller Lite Party Deck in left field, giving him seven RBIs on the game.
The Flyers got one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but fell 10-3 and dropped to 20-22 on the season, while the T-Bones improved to 22-21 as the two continue to battle for position behind Winnipeg in the Northern League standings. Pignatiello got the loss, dropping to 3-4 on the season, while Ryan Knippschild pitched eight innings to improve to 3-1.
While some towns are shutting down their Independence Day Fireworks shows, the Flyers say âthe show must go on!' with back-to-back fireworks nights concluding after Saturday night's game. LHP Alain Quijano (1-1, 4.50) takes the hill for the Flyers against LHP Luis Villarreal (2-2, 2.47) for the T-Bones. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
