Jackals Rock the Royals in Exhibition Game
Published on October 7, 2016 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release
READING, PA -The Elmira Jackals (2-0-0-0) played a stout defensive game and raced past the Reading Royals (0-1-0-0), 3-1, in an exhibition game at Santander Arena in Reading Friday night for their second win of the 2016 preseason.
The Jackals played an excellent first period and, after numerous chances, grabbed a 1-0 lead with 3:26 left in the frame. The Jackals sent a flurry of shots towards the Reading net and on the third or fourth rebound Casey Thrush snapped home a shot from the left circle, with Charlie Mosey and Ryan Wilkinson picking up the assists. Elmira continued to press for a second goal in the first, but Royals netminder Mark Dekanich made 12 stops to keep it at a 1-0 game heading into the second.
The Jackals quickly built on that lead to start the second period, converting on a constant forecheck. Thrush forced a turnover behind the Reading net and with Dekanich stuck in the trapezoid, Lou Educate tapped in the loose puck to make it 2-0 just 25 seconds into the period. After successfully killing two Royals power plays, the Jackals converted on a man advantage of their own midway through the second. Immediately following a Jackals faceoff win, defenseman Rich Botting fired home a shot from the point that beat Dekanich to make it 3-0 at 9:41, with Todd Christian and Zach Luczyk picking up assists on Botting's first goal.
Elmira continued its stiff defensive play in the third period, but the Royals finally broke through late in regulation to end Dalton McGrath's shutout bid. Zach Hall raced down the right wing and lifted a shot past McGrath to the short side with 3:05 left in the third to cut the Jackals lead to 3-1. The goal came on just the second Royals shot of the period. That was all the Royals would muster, despite pulling their goalie for the final two minutes as the Jackals earned their second straight win, 3-1.
