Jackals Reach Halfway Point Tied For Fourth Place

January 17, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Elmira Jackals News Release

Week 14 Recap:

In the midst of a 7-game home stand, the Elmira Jackals hosted their Eastern Conference rival Flint Generals for three games during Week 14. Despite excellent goaltending from starter Dave Lemanowicz the Jackals lost Friday's affair 2-1 when Flint goalie Bryan Worosz put on a 35 save show, allowing just one goal. Saturday Elmira turn the tides and drew level in the weekend series with a resounding 6-4 win. Curtis Tidball and Flint's Chad Wilcox dropped the gloves three times Saturday, to the delight of the home crowd, and Frank Littlejohn led the charge with a 4-point night (1 goal, 3 assists). In the rubber match on Sunday Elmira out-played and out-shot the Generals 5-on-5, but fell victim to some undisciplined penalties and the lethal Flint power play, as the Jackals allowed 3 goals in the second period, losing the finale 5-2.

The Jackals find themselves two games below .500 as they have reached the midway point of their season. With 38 games down and 38 to go, the Jackals will begin their run towards the Colonial Cup Playoffs this weekend with a 3-game series against the Quad City Mallards. Elmira beat Quad City 5-4 in a shootout on December 3rd in Moline, their only meeting so far this season. Week 14 Game Results:

1/12/07 Flint 2 @ Elmira 1

Elmira, NY - Jan Jas' third period goal broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Flint Generals a 2-1 win over the Elmira Jackals Friday night at First Arena in the first game of their 3-game weekend series. The Jackals doubled up the Generals in shots on goal in the first period 12-to-6, but neither team created many high-quality scoring chances in a lackluster opening twenty minutes.

Flint's Shawn Snider opened the scoring as he knocked in a short-handed goal at 11:10 of the 2nd period as he walked around the Elmira defense and beat goaltender Dave Lemanowicz for an unassisted goal. But two minutes later the Jackals drew level on their next power play when captain Brent Cullaton, playing in his first game back from injury, blazed in a shot from the point for a power play goal at 13:13, assisted by Eric Anderson and Scott Wray.

The third period was dominated by the Jackals offense and Flint's goaltender. Elmira bombarded the Generals net looking for the go ahead goal, while Bryan Worosz turned aside everything that was thrown at him. Against the run of play Jan Jas picked up a rebound from a Gerard Miller shot and scored at 10:14, assisted by Snider and Miller, giving Flint a 2-1 lead. The Jackals continued to throw shots at Worosz, who had an answer for everything Elmira could first on goal. Elmira out-shot Flint 14-6 in the final period, but the Generals rookie goalie was perfect in the third to earn the victory.

Bryan Worosz made 35 saves on 36 shots as he picked up his 7th win of the season as Flint improves to 16-22-3 on the season and leapfrogs ahead of the Jackals in the Eastern Conference standing. Dave Lemanowicz put in a strong performance, stopping 20-of-22 shots in the loss; Elmira drops to 17-18-0.

1/13/07 Flint 4 @ Elmira 6

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals leapfrogged from 5th to 3rd place in the UHL's Eastern Conference standings with a 6-4 win over the Flint Generals Saturday night at First Arena.

The fireworks began early as Elmira's Curtis Tidball and Flint's Chad Wilcox started the game in the penalty box after both were given 5-minute fighting majors for their actions during the pre-game warm-up. Immediately after serving their first penalty, Tidball and Wilcox threw down for round two at the 5:00 mark of the first period. Elmira used the momentum to throw a lot of shots on the Flint goal early on, but the Generals scored first, against the run of play, when Terry Marchant tallied his 10th goal of the season at 7:22. Frank Littlejohn tied the score at one when he redirected a Scott Drevitch shot from the point past goaltender Bryan Worosz for a power play goal at 9:35, assisted by Drevitch and Scott Wray. Captain Brent Cullaton gave Elmira their first lead of the game at 11:49, assisted by Drevitch and Tommy Kotsopoulos. After the goal, Tidball and Wilcox decided to go for a third round, with Tidball scoring a decisive victory, but both players earned automatic Game Misconducts for recording their third fighting major in one game. The Generals rallied to tied the game 2-2 when David Frawley knocked in a rebound at 13:19. Jeff Zehr took the lead again for Flint as he scored his 13th goal of the season at 7:36 of the second period, but it would be the last time the Generals were ahead in the game. Defenseman Chris Mann kick-started a 3-goal flurry by the Jackals as he cranked in a one-timer from the top of the left face-off circle at 12:59, assisted by Littlejohn and David Morelli. Scott Wray scored his team-leading 17th goal of the season at 14:06, assisted by Erik Anderson and Yevgeny Lazarev, putting the Jackals in front for good. Anderson scored what would be the eventual game-winner at 18:12, when he roofed a power play goal over the glove hand of Worosz, assisted by Littlejohn and Drevitch for a 5-3 Jackals lead after two periods.

Flint made it interesting as they scored the first goal of each period, when Bobby Reynolds made it 5-4 at 4:04. But rookie forward David Morelli put the game on ice as he notched his 12th of the year at 8:50 from Littlejohn to regain the Jackals two-goal lead and a 6-4 victory.

Dave Lemanowicz earned his 5th win of the season by blocking 18-of-22 shots as the Jackals improved to 18-19-0 on the season. Bryan Worosz made 29 saves on 35 shots in the loss for Flint, who falls to 16-23-3. Elmira was 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Generals were 0-for-3.

1/14/07 Flint 5 @ Elmira 2

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals unleashed 49 shots on the Flint Generals goal but lost 5-2 as Flint scored three power play goals Sunday afternoon at First Arena.

In a game in which the Jackals dominated the offensive chances 5-on-5, special teams would play a major factor in the outcome of the game. Scott Wray put the Jackals on top 1-0 at 6:06 of the first period, a beautiful passing sequence on the power play, assisted by Brent Cullaton and Erik Anderson. However, the momentum took a massive shift as Flint scored then next four goals. Mike Kinnie tied the game at one, scoring at 16:21 on a 5-on-3 power play.

Flint took the lead for good at 5:38 of the 2nd period when Bobby Reynolds took advantage of a puck that squirted loose behind goaltender Kris Tebbs, Flint's only even strength goal of the game. Terry Marchant made it 3-1 with a power play goal at 12:53, immediately followed by another power play goal, the Generals' 3rd power play goal of the game, this time scored by Jason Selleke at 14:03 as the Generals took a 4-1 lead into the third period.

Elmira came out buzzing in the third period, but goaltender Bryan Worosz stood tall in spite of the Jackals onslaught. Frank Littlejohn gave the Jackals a chance when he scored his 17th goal of the season at 17:40, assisted by Dale Lupul and Scott Drevitch. But the Generals added an empty net goal from Bobby Reynolds at 19:51 to cap a 5-2 win. Bryan Worosz made an amazing 47 saves on 49 shots to earn his 8th win of the season, pulling Flint ahead of the Jackals in the standings with a 17-23-3 record and 37 points. Kris Tebbs took the loss, blocking 30-of-34 shots as the Jackals fall to 18-20-0, 36 points. Flint was 3-for-9 on the power play, while the Jackals finished 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.
