Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today the signings of forwards David Herring and Justin Laverdiere. The team also placed forwards Josh Piro and Paul Falco on waivers.
At 5'11, 205 lbs, Laverdiere comes to the Jackals looking to make his professional debut. He played for the Quebec Ramparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2003-04, scoring 58 points (32 goals, 26 assists) in 64 games played. The 22-year old native of Woonsocket, RI is expected to make his Jackals debut Friday night against Richmond at the First Arena.
Herring was picked up by the Jackals after being released from the Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL. At 6'1" 205 lbs, Herring played four seasons of junior hockey for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League. At the end of his 2004-05 junior season in Erie, Herring made his professional debut with Greenville, just prior to playoffs. He endeared himself to the team in a big way, scoring the Series-Winning overtime goal to lift Greenville over Pensacola in the first round of the ECHL's Kelly Cup Playoffs. This season Herring attended his first NHL preseason camp with the Detroit Red Wings, before going back to Greenville.
"I realize that our biggest concern right now is our overall team defense," said Jackals Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations Perry Florio. "However, Sean & I felt that we could not pass up the opportunity to upgrade our lineup with these two signings. Our offense has lacked that energetic spark that we have seen in flashes and our physical presence needs to be improved. Laverdiere is a proven goal scorer who should bring a big boost to our offense. Herring is a big, strong kid, who loves to hit hard, play the physical game and he has a pension for scoring big goals."
To make room for the new signings, the Jackals placed Josh Piro and Paul Falco on waivers. UHL teams have until 3 pm Friday to make a claim on their rights, otherwise they will become free agents and able to join any team in or outside the UHL.
The Jackals return for two games against Richmond Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th at the First Arena. Face off for both games is at 7:05 pm. Sunday, November 13th Elmira is back in Virginia for another battle with Roanoke Valley.
