Odessa Jackalopes News Release
ODESSA, TX - The offense came alive for the Jackalopes, after a few games of being dormant, but unfortunately the Brahmas offense was more then up to the task.
The Odessa Jackalopes (5-8-1-1) fell 7-4 to the Lone Star Brahmas (12-3-0-1) at the Ector County Coliseum on Saturday night as the Jacks got swept by Lone Star on the three-game series.
The Jackalopes actually got a great start in the first period. Vilho Saariluoma put away a rebound that squeezed past the Lone Star goaltender to put Odessa up 1-0. This was soon after followed by a fight by Matt Hutton which brought the crowd to it's feet. However, the Brahmas rattled off five straight goals in a span of under eight minutes. Zach Stern was replaced by Aaron Randazzo after the third goal.
But then the Jackalopes came alive and scored twice in a span of just over 90 seconds. The first goal came off the stick of Michael Sacco who deked around a defender and then the goalie to put the puck in the back of the net and secure his second goal of the season.
This was followed up later by Ben Thomas's first goal as a Jackalope after he dispossessed a Brahma defender in neutral ice, streaked into the zone and pulled off a nice toe-drag in the slot. Sending a wrister toward the cage, Thomas saw his shot sail into the net and with that the Jackalopes had life, down 5-3 after the first period.
The second period was a gritty and hard fought affair, unfortunately for the Jackalopes the wrong team scored. The Brahmas extended their lead to 6-3 during a four-on-four situation.
The third period saw the Jackalopes score again to pull within two. This time it was Sacco who streaked down the ice on a two-on-one and rifle a shot into the top corner. Sacco's second of the night pulled Odessa within two to give them a chance but it was not enough in the end. The Brahmas scored on the empty net when the Jacks had the goaltender pulled and skated away with a 7-4 victory and a three-game sweep.
Despite the loss, the Jackalopes can take the offensive production as a serious positive. They can also look at the play of Michael Sacco and other leaders like Matt Hutton as good signs as the team hits the quarter mark of the regular season.
The Jackalopes will host the Shreveport Mudbugs next weekend for a two-game series starting on Friday, November 1 at 7:15 pm at the Ector County Coliseum.
