Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - Today, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of Tommy Henry, making him the 10th former Sod Poodle to make their way to the Major League roster for the Diamondbacks since the affiliation began ahead of the 2021 season. The left-handed pitcher and current No. 12 rated prospect in the Diamondbacks organization was 4-4 with a 3.83 ERA in 20 starts for Triple-A Reno prior to getting the call-up.
During his time with the Sod Poodles a season ago, Henry was 4-6 with a 5.21 ERA in a team-best 23 starts. The southpaw had pitched just three innings with then short-season Hillsboro in 2019 after being selected in the MLB Draft. The Portage, Michigan native was picked with the 74th overall pick by the Diamondbacks out of the University of Michigan.
In his first full season in pro ball, Henry ranked top 5 in the organization in games started (T-1, 23), innings pitched (3rd, 115.2), and strikeouts (4th, 135). His strikeout total led the Double-A Central a year ago and he was second in innings pitched in the league. This season already, Henry is tied for the third most innings pitched in the minors with 108.0 IP and is tied for second in games started behind fellow Reno Ace and former Sod Poodle, Ryne Nelson.
Henry has seven quality starts this season for the Aces, including two seven-inning shutout performances. He set a career-high earlier this season with 11 strikeouts on May 31 vs Tacoma (Seattle Mariners).
The list of former Sod Poodles to make their Major League debut with the Diamondbacks includes RHP Luis Frias, C Jose Herrera, LHP Tyler Holton, INF Buddy Kennedy, OF Jake McCarthy, RHP Brandyn Sittinger, OF Alek Thomas, and now Henry. They join RHP Humberto Mejia and INF Geraldo Perdomo who were recalled to the Major League roster during the 2021 season. Since 2019 as a San Diego Padres affiliate, there have now been 32 former Sod Poodles to make it to 'The Show'.
The Diamondbacks are on the road facing the Cleveland Guardians with first pitch scheduled for 12:10 PM CT. The Diamondbacks lineup features five former Sod Poodles with CF Alek Thomas, LF Jake McCarthy, SS Geraldo Perdomo, C Jose Herrera, and Henry on the bump. The game can be seen on Bally Sports Arizona or through MLB.TV. Batting fourth for the Guardians is 2019 Sod Poodle, Owen Miller.
