Crystal Palace Baltimore News Release
Bayamon, Puerto Rico - The away form that has helped Palace Baltimore win three games on the road this season, deserted the men in white as they fell 2-0 to the Islanders at the Estadio Juan Ramon Lobriel in Bayamon. A 24th minute strike by Martinez opened accounts and a 40th minute own goal by Andrew Marshall ensured that the Islanders picked up all three points. The Islanders' win elevates them to 17 points and over Palace Baltimore who remain on 15 points.
The Islanders' opener was a punishing strike by Martinez on 24 minutes. The right full back was on hand to thump the ball into the inside of Palace Baltimore's side netting when a deflected cross found it's way to him just inside the edge of the 18 yard box.
Puerto Rico's second goal was courtesy of a Palace defensive miscue by Andrew Marshall towards the end of the first half. The big number five redirected a venomous cross from a set piece by his goaltender, Evan Bush, and into his own net.
At the half way mark of their season, Palace have enjoyed their fair share of ups and downs. Friday's performance was again punctuated by more good counterattacking, but this time Baltimore failed to conjure up any of the magic that lifted them over the Minnesota Stars.
"Our energy was really good and the commitment was there," commented Palace Baltimore Head Coach, Jim Cherneski. "We just came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline."
The first red card of Palace Baltimore's 2010 USSF D-2 campaign was issued to Argentinian winger, Santiago Fusilier. The ex-RailHawk was given his marching orders in the 74th minute after a lazy but heavy challenge on Nicholas Addlery.
Fusilier's sending off allowed the Puerto Ricans to take advantage of the space on the flanks and they continued to mount probing attacks but could not capitalize on their pressure or scoring opportunities. When the final whistle blew, the Islanders headed back to the dressing room 2-0 winners
Palace Baltimore return home to face the red-hot Rochester Rhinos on Wednesday, July 14 at the Maryland SoccerPlex at 7 p.m. They then head back on the road to play the dangerous Montreal Impact in the the Saputo Stadium, July 18 at 2:00 p.m.
