Ironmen Fall Short

January 31, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Jamestown Ironmen News Release

Your Jamestown Ironmen came up short with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Soo Eagles during North American Hockey League action on Thursday.

Despite the 11am start, it was one of the loudest games of the season, as the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena was full of area youth as part of the Ironmen School Day Game. Students from area elementary and middle schools made the wintery trek to the Arena to root on their hometown hockey team.

Jamestown (27-11-4) never held a lead in the contest, and the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 edge off of a powerplay goal with 4:13 left in the first period.

The Ironmen never fell back by too much either, as they tied the game up at 1-1 with a goal from Luc Gerdes 5:04 into the second. Assists came from Evan Ritt and Ryan Doucet.

The Eagles (28-10-4) climbed back on top, netting a goal with less than nine minutes remaining in the third. Jamestown hung around and tied the contest up once again with a slap shot from Dylan Zink with just over a minute left in regulation. Assists on the powerplay goal were credited to Tyler Dunagan and Daniel Cesarz.

The teams took the 2-2 tie into a four-on-four overtime, which went scoreless, and then headed into a shootout.

Cesarz was the only Ironmen player to beat the Soo goaltender in the shootout, and the Eagles walked away with the 3-2 win. Jamestown outshot the opponent, 35-27 and earned one point in the shootout loss while Tim Shaughnessy made 24 saves in goal for the home team.

"It was a really good game, and both goalies played very well," said a frustrated Ironmen Head Coach Dan Daikawa. "It's disappointing to lose. We are talking about a couple bounces here or there; that's the difference between a win and a loss. For the most part we played well, and we need to come out and win our next one."

In a tight race for the NAHL North Division, Jamestown sites in second place, two points behind the Soo Eagles. Daikawa's squad looks to even the standings with a two-point win tonight, as the two teams will square off at 7:00 pm at the JSBA.

Note: Tonight is Ladies Night sponsored by Elite Kreations, ladies will receive $2 off their ticket to the game along with food and beverage specials in Sully's Irish Pub.
