Ironmen Suffer Overtime Setback
May 10, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Jamestown Ironmen News Release
The Jamestown Ironmen fell 2-1 in overtime to the top seeded Amarillo Bulls on Friday night in Frisco, Texas.
It was the first game of the North American Hockey League Robertson Cup Tournament for both franchises.
Fourth seeded Jamestown, took a first period lead when Matthew Crocket netted a goal with assists from Ross Pavek and JoeMottiqua.
The Ironmen edge stood deep into the third period until the Bulls capitalized on the power play to tie the game up at 1-1 with 7:01 remaining in regulation.
The two teams stood deadlocked and headed into overtime. It only took 3:12 for the Bulls to strike in the extra period and claim the 2-1 victory.
Joe Ballmer stood tough in goal for the Ironmen making 18 saves on 20 shots, but it wasn't enough as the Ironmen suffered their first setback of the postseason. Jamestown only tallied 18 shots throughout the contest as Amarillo held the Ironmen offensive attack in check.
After sweeping both of their divisional playoff series on their way to Texas, the Ironmen are now faced with some unfamiliar adversity.
"It's disappointing, but it is something we need to deal with," said Ironmen head coach Dan Daikawa. "A loss isn't the outcome we wanted, but there is still hockey to be played, and our goal remains the same."
Daikawa's goal: to bring a championship to Jamestown.
Jamestown still has an opportunity to make that happen as they take on the Wenatchee Wild today at 5:30pm. The Wild are also coming off a loss at the hands of the Bismarck Bobcats who will lock up with the Ironmen on Sunday at 8:30pm.
The Robertson Cup Tournament features four NAHL division winners who are battling in a round robin throughout the weekend. After round-robin play is complete on Sunday evening, the two top teams will hash it out on Monday night to crown a NAHL Champion.
All games will be shown live at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena for local fans.
