
Iowa Hangs on to Topple Omaha

DES MOINES - David Rollins (3-3) twirled three shutout innings in a spot start and the Iowa Cubs (41-47) defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers (39-47) 7-5, Friday at Principal Park.
Rollins dominated in his three innings of work, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Justin Hancock (1-0), making his Iowa debut, came in for two innings in place of Rollins and allowed one run en route to the win.
Iowa blew the game wide open in the second. Jeimer Candelario led off the inning with a deep home run to left field, his 10th of the year with Iowa. Four straight I-Cubs reached base following Candelario to continue the scoring, before Jemile Weeks smacked a bases-clearing double to make it 6-0. Chris Dominguez crushed a long homer in the fifth to add to the lead.
Omaha got a run back in the fourth, but made it a close game in the seventh after loading the bases against Ross Detwiler. Fernando Rodriguez came in to pitch and gave up a grand slam to Raul Mondesi to cut the lead to 7-5. Rodriguez settled in and pitched the remainder of the seventh and eighth. Matt Carasiti took the ninth and earned his second save as an I-Cub with a 1-2-3 frame.
Onelki Garcia (1-1) took the loss, while Hancock, Detwiler, Rodriguez and Carasiti combined to throw six innings, allowing five runs and striking out six. Dominguez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Weeks 1-for-4 with three RBI to lead the offensive charge for Iowa.
