International League Names Players of the Week
September 4, 2012 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Rochester outfielder Wilkin Ramirez and Pawtucket pitcher Nelson Figueroa have been named the League's final Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the 2012 season, representing the period from August 27-September 3. Figueroa has now tied an International League record held by Doug Linton and Josh Towers by winning his fifth career IL Pitcher of the Week Award. Figueroa was also honored in 2001 with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, twice in 2009 with Buffalo, and once in 2010 with Lehigh Valley. (The International League has named Players of the Week since 1985).
WILKIN RAMIREZ, Rochester Red Wings IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
The League leader over the last eight days of the regular season in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, and runs scored was Rochester outfielder Wilkin Ramirez. He collected multiple hits in five games, and most of the damage done by his bat was of the extra-base variety. Eight of his eleven hits since August 27 went for extra-bases; no other International League player had more than six extra-base hits over the same period. Ramirez also drove in ten runs down the stretch to finish the season with a team-best 54 RBI.
26-year-old Wilkin Ramirez has played professionally since 2003. He is a veteran of 35 Major League games with the Tigers and Braves. Ramirez is a native of Bani, Dominican Republic.
NELSON FIGUEROA, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
With a playoff berth hanging in the balance, Pawtucket veteran right-hander Nelson Figueroa turned in a pair of victorious starts and helped bring home the Wild Card for his club. Last Monday on the road he went 7.1 innings to defeat the Gwinnett Braves 3-1, allowing just three hits in the contest. Then on Saturday with a chance to wrap up the Wild Card race, Figueroa shutout the division champion Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees over 8.0 innings as the PawSox won the game 2-0 and celebrated a postseason berth. Figueroa, who spent much of this season as a member of the SWB Yankees, finished with 12 wins, tied for 4th in the IL.
38-year-old Nelson Figueroa has pitched professionally since 1997. He has appeared in over 140 games as a Major League pitcher with the Diamondbacks, Phillies, Brewers, Pirates, Mets, and Astros. Figueroa is a native of Brooklyn, New York.
