International League Names Players of the Week

Published on August 20, 2012 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Columbus second baseman Cord Phelps and Buffalo pitcher Collin McHugh have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 13-19. Phelps is the League-leading fifth member of the Clippers to win an IL weekly award this season, following Matt LaPorta (April 23-29), Russ Canzler (June 11-17), Jeanmar Gomez (July 9-15), and Ezequiel Carrera (July 23-29). McHugh is the second member of the Bisons to be so honored this season, following Fred Lewis (July 9-15).

CORD PHELPS, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Columbus second baseman Cord Phelps led the International League with a 1.000 slugging percentage and 10 runs scored this week, while finishing 2nd with a .500 batting average, six extra-base hits, and three home runs. Phelps seemed to do a little bit of everything this week. On Tuesday he went 1-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Wednesday he went 4-4 with two doubles, a homer, four RBI and three runs scored. He nearly matched that effort Thursday when he collected four more hits with a double, homer, and 5 RBI. Phelps homered for the third straight game on Friday, and completed his amazing week on Sunday by racking up two more hits and three more runs scored. For the season, Phelps is now 4th in the International League with 32 doubles and he's 3rd in runs scored with 73.

25-year-old Cord Phelps is in his fifth season as a professional player and third at the Triple-A level. He is also a veteran of 35 Major League games with the Cleveland Indians, all coming in 2011. Phelps is a native of Stanford, California.

COLLIN MCHUGH, Buffalo Bisons IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Buffalo right-hander Collin McHugh was brilliant this week, allowing just one run in 12.2 innings of work for the Bisons against the Pawtucket Red Sox. On Monday McHugh took the hill at home and turned in 5.2 innings of one-run baseball, but left with the score knotted 1-1 and did not factor into the decision. Then on Saturday McHugh got the ball for the "Futures at Fenway" matchup with Pawtucket at Boston's Fenway Park. McHugh was dominant on the big stage, scattering five hits over 7.0 shutout innings in the 2-0 Buffalo victory. It was the first win for McHugh in seven starts since the All-Star Break, despite the fact he owns a 2.70 ERA during that stretch.

25-year-old Collin McHugh is in his fifth season as a professional pitcher and his first at the Triple-A level. He began the 2012 season with Double-A Binghamton but was promoted in June after posting a 2.41 ERA through his first 12 starts. McHugh is a native of Covington, Georgia.
