International League Announces Players Of The Week
Published on May 31, 2010 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Columbus outfielder Jordan Brown and Durham pitcher Jeremy Hellickson have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 24-30. It is the second career IL Player of the Week Award for both men (Brown - May 18-24, 2009; Hellickson - April 12-18, 2010). Hellickson is now the first player in the League to win multiple weekly awards this season.
JORDAN BROWN, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Jordan Brown collected multiple hits in four games this week and paced the International League with 11 RBI to earn Batter of the Week honors. Brown went 2-5 and drove in four runs Monday night at Charlotte. The Clippers later returned home for a four-game set against Lehigh Valley, during which Brown torched the IronPigs by going 8-15 in the series. Friday night he collected 5 RBI, and added his first home run of the season Saturday.
26-year-old Jordan Brown is in his fifth full season of professional baseball after being selected by the Indians in the 4th round of the 2005 draft. Last year he was the International League Batting Champion, having posted the 2nd-best average in Columbus franchise history (.336). Brown is a native of Walnut City, California.
JEREMY HELLICKSON, Durham Bulls IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, the IL leader in wins and strikeouts this season, rode two outstanding starts to IL Pitcher of the Week honors. Hellickson led the League in wins, innings pitched, ERA, and strikeouts over the past seven days. He nearly made history Monday night against Pawtucket. Perfect through six innings, he surrendered a walk to Tug Hulett leading off the 7th. An inning later, Aaron Bates singled to right to ruin his no-hit bid. Hellickson finished the outing having allowed just the one hit and one walk in 8.0 innings. His brilliance continued Sunday against Rochester as he tossed 7.0 shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven with no walks for his IL-best 8th win of the season.
23-year-old Jeremy Hellickson is in his fifth full season of professional baseball after being selected by Tampa Bay in the 8th round of the 2005 draft. Last year he was the Minor League Pitcher of the Year in the Rays organization, and was named the winner of the Bobby Murcer Most Valuable Player Award at the 2009 Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game. Hellickson is a native of Des Moines, Iowa.
