Durham Bulls News Release
(Moosic, PA) - JJ Furmaniak's walk started a four-run rally in the sixth, as the Bulls opened an eight-game road trip on Memorial Day with a 9-1 win over Scranton.
Furmaniak, who was on base three times, then stole second against Ivan Nova (2-2) and scored on a Fernando Perez base hit to center to tie the game at one. Rashad Eldridge walked, and then Elliot Johnson beat out a grounder hit wide of first to load the bases. Kelly Shoppach, in his first game with the Bulls on MLB rehab, singled to center, scoring a pair of runs, giving Durham a 3-1 lead. Dan Johnson capped the rally with his second hit of the night for a 4-1 advantage.
Durham, which put together 15 hits, scored three more runs in the sixth, chasing Nova. One run scored on a double-play ball, and both Elliot Johnson and Jose Lobaton added RBI singles. The Bulls added single runs in the seventh and eighth to cap the scoring. Desmond Jennings highlighted the attack, going 3-for-4 with a walk. Every Bulls player reached base at least one, and eight different Bulls scored and had a hit.
That was enough for Heath Phillips (4-4), who combined with three others to hold Scranton to a run on six hits.
Durham (29-22) has won two straight, and has a 5.5 game lead in the South Division. The Bulls visit Scranton at PNC Field on Tuesday with Aneury Rodriguez (2-2) up against Zach McAllister (4-2) in a battle of righties. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 6:50 with first pitch at 7:05.
