Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Buffalo Bisons by a score of 7-4 on Monday afternoon at Coca Cola Field. Syracuse won in comeback fashion for the second straight day and has now won all three games against Buffalo this season.
Syracuse (30-20) starter Jeff Mandel was touched up early when Bisons shortstop Ruben Tejada doubled to left and was knocked in on a single by Daniel Murphy in the first. The Chiefs tied the game at one in the top of the third when Pedro Lopez singled leading off and scored on a Boomer Whiting single.
Whiting, who made his Triple-A debut on Monday, finished the game three for three with a walk and a run scored. He reached base in all five of his at bats, one of which was scored a fielders choice and an error on Bisons pitcher Adam Pettyjohn. Whiting also stole a base after stealing twelve to start the season with Class-A Potomac.
Buffalo (29-22) retaliated in the bottom of the third with three runs off of Mandel. Tejada reached on an error by Chiefs second baseman Pete Orr and Justin Turner followed with a single. Daniel Murphy connected on two run double and he was plated on a single from Russ Adams. After three, Buffalo led 4-1.
In the fourth trailing by three, Chase Lambin led off against Bisons starter and major league rehabber Jonathon Niese with a home run to left field. It was Lambin's team leading seventh home run of the year.
Syracuse continued to trail 4-2 going into the seventh, but they would respond. Lopez led off with a double and pinch hitter Kevin Mench singled. Orr followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3. With the bases loaded and Pettyjohn (0-2) on the mound, Josh Whitesell walked to score the tying run. The Chiefs took the lead for good when Lopez hit a home run to lead off the eighth. It was his first home run of the season and the 30th of his professional career spanning back to 2001.
The Chiefs tacked on two more runs in the ninth to extend the lead to the final margin of 7-4. Whitesell finished the day with two runs batted in and Orr, Lambin, Duncan and Lopez each knocked in one.
Atahualpa Severino (3-0) earned the win in relief and Joel Peralta pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixteenth save of the season.
The Chiefs and Bisons play game two of their four game series on Tuesday night. Scheduled starters are Shairon Martis (2-3,4.84) for Syracuse and Pat Misch (4-1, 3.02) for Buffalo. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
