Indoor Football League Conference Championship Preview
Published on July 28, 2009 under Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 - EL PASO GENERALS (13-2) @ BILLINGS OUTLAWS (5-4), 7:05 PM
As expected, arguably the two most impressive regular season teams will meet this weekend, with the winner claiming the 2009 IFL Intense Conference Championship. After cruising to a 12-2 record during the regular season, and securing a first round bye, the El Paso Generals easily handled the San Angelo Stampede Express last weekend in El Paso during the second round of Divisional play. In that game, Second Team All-IFL Quarterback Tommy Jones completed 15 of 21 passes for 236 yards and six scores. His favorite target of the night was receiver Lemans Casmier who caught six passes for 109 yards and a score. Receiver Josh Smith hauled in three Jones touchdown passes as well. On defense, LB Sam Smith and First Team All-IFL defensive lineman Ron Ellington combined for 15 tackles, two for a loss, and a sack. To beat Billings on the road this weekend, and advance to the United Bowl, the Generals will have to once again come out firing and prove to the rest of the league why they were the #1 ranked passing offense in the IFL all season. This game promises to be an epic offensive battle.
The Billings Outlaws, the top seeded team heading into the post-season and the IFL's top scoring offense, are undefeated at home this season. They hope that trend continues this weekend as they vie for the Intense Conference Championship. By winning the Pacific Division, and securing a first round bye, the Outlaws needed just one win over the Fairbanks Grizzlies to reach this game. They got that win by virtue of their stingy defense. The Outlaws allowed and early score to the Grizzlies and then shut the door. Led by Kelly Rouse, who returned a fumble 27 yards for a score, the Outlaws allowed only 130 yards of total offense. Rouse and the rest of the defense wants nothing more then to put the final stamp on an amazing season by claiming the first ever IFL United Bowl Trophy.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 - RIVERCITY RAGE (10-6) @ WICHITA WILD (10-6), 7:05 PM
The third seeds in both the Central and Atlantic Divisions both defied the odds and will meet in the 2009 Indoor Football League's United Conference Championship. The Rage got to this point by defeating the Rochester Raiders in Round One, and then outscoring the Atlantic Division Regular Season Champion Maryland Maniacs in Round Two. QB Ben Sankey has been the catalyst for the Rage offense during these playoffs. Through two games he has thrown for 351 yards and tossed ten touchdown passes. Sankey has also received a lot of help from his running backs and receivers as well. RB Randy Bell has scored four touchdowns this post season, with two coming via the ground and another two through the air. On defense, Cornelius "Pig" Brown showed up in a big way last weekend against the Maniacs. The Rage defensive back totaled seven tackles, one for a loss, broke up a pass, and forced a crucial fumble to lead his team to a 55-31 victory and a shot to play in the first ever IFL United Bowl.
The Wichita Wild got to this point by defeating the Bloomington Extreme in Round One, and then edging the Central Division Regular Season Champion Omaha Beef in Round Two. Currently riding a five game winning streak heading into this contest, the Wild hope to continue their offensive dominance and secure a spot in the United Bowl Championship. Last week against Omaha, Receiver Clinton Solomon caught seven Dixie Wooten passes for 119 yards and three scores. Not to be outdone this post-season is the play of Randy Kelly. The Defensive back has picked off two passes, is averaging 21 yards per kickoff return, and has 14 total tackles thru two playoff games. This game figures to go down to the final whistle.
