Indoor Football League Announces Week Eight Vidswap.com Players of the Week
April 21, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
Richmond, VA: The Indoor Football League is proud to reveal the honorees for Week Eight Vidswap.com Players of the Week. As the IFL crosses into the second half of the season we announce a repeat winner for the first time this year. Each week the IFL will select three players, one from each phase of the game, offense, defense, and specials teams, whose play on the field stood out among the rest of the competition. Eleven games were featured in the eight weekend of play and the following player's performances propelled them to Week Eight Vidswap.com Players of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week: QB Jake Phillips, Green Bay Blizzard
Jake Phillips becomes the first two-time honoree for a player of the week award in 2010. In his rookie IFL season, Phillips has his team rolling as the Blizzard sit atop the Central North Division with a 6-1 record. In one of the more exciting finishes thus far this season, the Blizzard pulled out an amazing 72-69 victory over the West Michigan ThunderHawks. Trailing 55-33 heading into the fourth quarter, the Blizzard turned towards their fearless leader. Phillips sparked an improbable comeback as he tossed 3 TD passes and ran for another in the final period of play. With the scored tied at 69, Phillips marched his team down the field to set up a game winning 22 yard field goal by K TIno Amancio. Phillips finished the game completing 21 of 33 passes for 238 yards and 6 TD's and carried the ball 10 times for 38 yards and a TD. Phillips and the rest of the Blizzard will look to build momentum for the playoffs when they host the Omaha Beef in Week Nine.
Defensive Player of the Week: DL John Fields, Kent Predators
The Kent Predators have been on a roll lately, racking up three consecutive victories to even their record at 3-3. DL John Fields has been a big reason for the turnaround. Fields was a terror on the field Sunday as the Predators dominated the Tri-Cities Fever 55-33. During the game, Fields tallied 3.5 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, 2 sacks, and added 3 pass breakups. Fields now leads the IFL in sacks with 7 on the season. The Predators will need another solid performance from the defensive lineman if they want to get above the .500 mark when they travel to the "Windy City" to take on the Chicago Slaughter in Week Nine.
Special Teams Player of the Week: K Rob Zarrilli, Sioux Falls Storm
Through the first three quarters of play on Saturday the score was Wichita Wild 20, Rob Zarrilli 12. The Sioux Falls Storm relied heavily on the kicker during the first 45 minutes of play as the only points they could salvage were Zarrilli's 4 field goals. The rest of the Storm offense eventually got on track in the final quarter but Zarrilli's efforts kept the team within striking distance and led to a 34-27 victory for the Storm. Zarrilli finished the game with 16 points, converting on 5 of 6 field goal attempts and added an extra point conversion. The Storm will have some time to rest and regroup as they have a bye in Week Nine.
The IFL season continues with Week Nine on Friday April 23rd when the Bloomington Extreme travel to play the Rochester Raiders and the La Crosse Spartans host the West Michigan ThunderHawks. You can view live broadcasts of IFL games all season long at www.b2livetv.com.
