LOUISVILLE, KYâ A one hour four minute rain delay could not deter the Indians from defeating the Bats, 6-4. The win gives Indianapolis sole possession of second place in the International League's West Division.
The Indians struck quickly when Trent Durrington scored on a fielder's choice by Jeff Liefer in the first inning. Indianapolis broke the tie in the sixth inning when Peter Bergeron singled to right field to score Liefer. Alex Delgado then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Housman. The Indians rallied in the ninth inning to tie the game when Matt Erickson singled home Ryan Knox. Alex Delgado then hit a bases loaded single to score Erickson and Liefer for the lead.
Indianapolis starter Brooks Kieschnick came out of the game after the first inning, as planned, due to his Major League rehab assignment and limited pitch count. Housman came on in the second inning and allowed one run on six hits and three walks while striking out two in four plus innings of work. Housman left the game due to a strained groin. Dan Reichert did not allow a hit in walking three and striking out three in two innings pitched. Despite giving up three runs on five hits in two innings of work, Ben Ford (2-2) came away with the victory.
The Bats did tie the game in the third inning when Tim Hummel doubled down the right field line to score Jermaine Clark. Ray Olmedo hit a two-out infield single in the eighth inning to score Dane Sardinha. Anderson Machado then followed with a game-tying single to right field to score Aaron Holbert. Clark hit a sacrifice fly to score Olmedo as the go-ahead run.
Louisville starter Dustin Moseley pitched solidly in his effort. Moseley allowed two runs on seven hits, two walks and striking out three in five and a third innings of work. Juan Cerros, Mike Matthews and Brian Mallette provided solid middle relief in allowing just one hit and striking out four. Aaron Myette (3-3) blew his save opportunity allowing three runs in the ninth inning.
The time of tonight's game was 3:12 and the attendance was 7,515. The Bats will travel to Indianapolis to play two more games with the Indians beginning Friday, September 3rd at 8:00 p.m. The starting pitchers will be RHP Brian Rose (2-2, 3.68) for Louisville, while Indianapolis will start RHP Matt Childers (5-5, 5.09).
