
Indians Have 14 Roster Moves In One Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians have had 14 roster moves over the past three days. Right-handers Jimmy Barthmaier, T.J. Beam, Ty Taubenheim, John Van Benschoten and Romulo Sanchez were all called up to Pittsburgh over the weekend.
Before Friday's game, RHP Yoslan Herrera was promoted from Double-A Altoona (Pa.) and RHP T.J. Beam was optioned from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis, while RHP Jimmy Barthmaier was recalled by the Pirates and RHP Chris Hernandez was assigned to Altoona.
Herrera (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) earned the win in his Triple-A debut on Friday evening at Columbus. The 27-year-old went 4-7 with a 3.12 ERA in 15 starts for Altoona prior to his first Triple-A promotion.
Barthmaier (2.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) suffered the loss in his Major League debut on Friday night against Tampa Bay. The 24-year-old turned in a 2-1 record and 2.84 ERA in five Triple-A starts from May 30-June 21.
Beam owns a 2-1 record, 2.03 ERA and four saves in 26 Triple-A appearances this season. The 27-year-old allowed five earned runs in 2.1 innings and lost his only decision for the Pirates from June 22-25.
Hernandez owns a 5.56 ERA with no decisions in eight Triple-A relief appearances this season. The 27-year-old went 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA and four saves in 14 Double-A relief outings from April 4-May 15.
Before Saturday's affair, the Tribe added four players to the roster and removed four others from the active list.
Barthmaier was optioned from Pittsburgh back to Indianapolis, RHP Ryan Drese was assigned to Indianapolis after signing with Pittsburgh as a Minor League free agent, LHP Corey Hamman was promoted from Altoona and Hernandez returned to the Indians active roster.
In addition, RHPs T.J. Beam, Ty Taubenheim and John Van Benschoten were all recalled by the Pirates, while Herrera was sent back to Altoona.
Drese went 6-1 with a 3.44 ERA in 11 starts for Camden (N.J.) of the Atlantic League. The 32-year-old allowed 76 hits and 18 walks while striking out 26 in 65.1 innings for the Riversharks.
Hamman went 4-6 with a 3.15 ERA in 15 outings (12 starts) for the Curve from April 5-June 24. The 28-year-old was acquired by the Pirates organization from Detroit in the Minor League Rule 5 draft on Dec. 6, 2007.
Beam was in Columbus for approximately 24 hours before getting the nod to head back east on I-70.
Taubenheim entered the season with a 1-5 record and 5.40 ERA in 13 Major League appearances. The 25-year-old turned in a 4-9 record and 4.60 ERA in 16 Triple-A starts from April 5-June 23.
Van Benschoten went 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA in four appearances (one start) for the Pirates earlier this season. The 28-year-old turned in a 7-2 record and 3.75 ERA in 12 Triple-A starts from April 7-April 22 and May 16-June 24.
Then, before Sunday's contest, OF Nyjer Morgan was optioned from Pittsburgh back to Indianapolis and RHP Romulo Sanchez was recalled by the Pirates.
Morgan has also posted a .143 batting average with two RBI and one stolen base in 26 big league games this season. The 27-year-old turned in a .239 BA, 10 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 37 Triple-A contests from May 9-June 17.
Sanchez was recalled by Pittsburgh for the first time this year and the second time in his career. The 24-year-old posted a 4-0 record, 2.85 ERA and four saves in 25 Triple-A relief appearances from April 5-June 26. He went 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA in 16 relief outings for the Pirates a season ago.

Indianapolis returns to Victory Field on Friday for the annual Independence Day special. The Indians are scheduled to battle Louisville at 6 p.m., and two fireworks spectaculars will follow the game.
