In Memoriam - George "Butch" Fisher

August 1, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL) News Release

CONYERS, GA - The South Coast League is deeply saddened by the passing of Supervisor of Umpires George "Butch" Fisher. Fisher, who lost his battle with lung cancer early Wednesday morning, played a vital role in the rejuvenation of modern day Independent baseball.

The Stacy, MN resident spent more than 40 years umpiring, supervising, and training others in the game he loved and knew so well. He served as the Supervisor of Umpires in the Northern League in 1993-94, then again from 1996-2004, prior to joining the South Coast League in 2006.

In reaction to this loss, the South Coast League issued the following statement.

"Butch was a great baseball mind, and an even better person. Our deepest condolences go out to the Fisher family and all that have been affected by this loss. Butch had a tremendous passion for umpiring and the game of baseball and he will certainly be missed."

Fisher also had major impact in helping form an umpires association in his home state. Products of that group include current major league umpires Jeff Nelson, Tim Tschida and Mark Wegner.

In remembrance, the South Coast League has named an award in his honor. The "Butch Fisher Award" will be presented to the league's top umpire as voted on by the team managers. The award will not be based solely on merit, but also to the umpire that exemplifies the passion and knowledge of the game that made Butch Fisher the man he was to so many.

For anyone that would like to send their own words of encouragement to the Fisher family through a card or flowers, contact the league office for further details.
