Montreal Impact News Release
MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact plays the Vancouver Whitecaps, Wednesday at Saputo Stadium, in its fourth and final match of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship (8 pm, Sportsnet, RDS, sportsnet.ca, CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990).
In its first three matches of the tournament, the Impact lost 2-0 in Toronto on April 28, tied the Whitecaps 1-1 on May 5 at Swangard Stadium and was shut out 1-0 by Toronto FC on May 12 at Saputo Stadium.
This will already be the third game between Montreal and Vancouver in 2010. On May 15, once again at Swangard Stadium, but for a regular season encounter, the Impact and Whitecaps played to a scoreless draw.
"We may be eliminated, but we want to finish the tournament as high in the standings as possible. We'll be playing for our fans tomorrow," declared Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. "There's a great rivalry between these two teams, especially after two tough matches against each other this month."
The Whitecaps have to win Wednesday's game in order to stay in the running for the Canadian championship. After tying the Impact 1-1, the Whitecaps also tied Toronto FC 0-0 on May 19 at Swangard Stadium in the second game of the tournament.
Vancouver will face Toronto FC, June 2 at BMO Field, in the sixth and final match of the tournament.
"We want to win tomorrow," also said midfielder Rocco Placentino. "We are expecting the Whitecaps to be flying on the field because they are still in the race. But we are playing at home and we don't want to lose in front of our fans in Montreal. At the same time, a good result would be good for the morale of the team before our next regular season game against Carolina."
In its most recent game, Montreal tied Italian Serie A club Fiorentina 1-1 on Sunday at Saputo Stadium as part of an international friendly.
Defender Simon Gatti (knee) and forward Roberto Brown (groin) are not expected to play due to their injuries. For the Whitecaps, defenders Blake Wagner (foot) and Mouloud Akloul (ankle) are also expected to miss the game due to their injuries.
Vancouver will join Major League Soccer in 2011. Montreal will be joining MLS as the 19th team. The team will begin play in the 2012 season, at Saputo Stadium, which will be expanded to more than 20,000 seats. Only 5,000 seats are available on presale. Registration on a priority list will be required and a $50 deposit will be requested per ticket. To reserve a spot, visit montrealmls2012.com.
