Ignition post 2-1 record at Milwaukee Wave's preseason classic

(Milwaukee, Wis., October 7, 2007) - The Detroit Ignition finished the Milwaukee Wave's Preseason Classic this weekend with a 2-1 record. The club defeated the Milwaukee Wave 9-6 and beat the expansion Orlando Sharks 11-2. The Ignition fell to the Chicago Storm 10-6. A game-by-game breakdown of the Ignition's tournament action is as follows:

GAME 1, Detroit Ignition vs. Milwaukee Wave: The Detroit Ignition posted a 9-6 victory over the Milwaukee Wave on Friday at the Wave's Preseason Classic.

The Wave struck first in the contest, as midfielder Marcio Leite notched a two-point goal midway through the first quarter. Detroit quickly evened up the score with a goal from midfielder Vahid Assadpour, an Ignition training camp participant.

The scoreboard remained 2-all until the fourth quarter, when Leite posted two more points for Milwaukee. Again the Ignition answered, with a two-point goal off the head of defender Ryan Mack. Midfielder Kyt Selaidopoulos tallied an assist on the goal.

Assadpour notched a second goal on a shot deflected by Alex Woods, another training camp participant, to put Detroit up 6-4.

Late in the fourth, Selaidopoulos booted a three-point goal past Milwaukee's sixth attacker. With time expiring, Milwaukee midfielder Keegan Hudson notched another two points for the Wave, making the final score 9-6.

GAME 2, Detroit Ignition vs. Chicago Storm: The Detroit Ignition was defeated by the Chicago Storm 10-6 in the club's second preseason game Saturday morning.

The contest's first goal came off the foot of Chicago midfielder Matthew Stewart at 9:46 in the first quarter. The scoreboard remained 2-0 until 4:32 in the third quarter, when Chicago forward Jeremy Gold notched a two-point goal with an assist from defender Will Kletzien.

Detroit went into the fourth quarter scoreless, as Storm forward Carlos "Chile" Farias booted a two-point goal past keeper T.J. Tomasso, a training camp participant, to make the score 6-0. At 5:46, Farias, who played for the Ignition last season, tallied an assist on a two-point power-play goal scored by Storm defender Fabinho.

With 8:47 left to play, Ignition midfielder Ricardinho put Detroit's first points on the board with a two-point goal. Forward Hewerton Moreira was credited with the assist.

Chicago struck again at 9:15, as forward Ian Bennett scored a two-point goal off an assist from midfielder John Ball. Following the goal, Detroit brought Ricardinho back in as a sixth attacker.

Ignition forward Jamar Beasley notched his first goal of the tournament at 11:46, a two-point goal off an assist from Moreira. Beasley was the Major Indoor Soccer League's MVP in the 2006-07 season, as well as the PUMA Scoring Champion with 107 points.

With 1:10 to go, Moreira booted a two point goal past Chicago keeper Trae Manny to make the score 10-6. Beasley tallied an assist on the goal.

GAME 3, Detroit Ignition vs. Orlando Sharks: The Detroit Ignition defeated the expansion Orlando Sharks 11-2 in the club's final game of the Milwaukee Wave's Preseason Classic.

Forward Worteh Sampson scored the game's first goal, a two-point shot off an assist from defender Droo Callahan at 4:24 in the first quarter. Defender Zachary Wilkes, an Ignition training camp participant, put a three-point goal past keeper Paul Nagy at 11:29. As the first half came to a close, the Ignition held a commanding 5-0 lead over the Sharks.

The Ignition kept their foot on the gas as the second half began, with defender Ryan Mack scoring a two-point goal at 7:41 in the third quarter. With 2:26 left to play in the third, Sampson notched another two-point goal for Detroit, increasing the club's lead to nine.

16 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Ignition struck again. Forward Abraham Francois, a training camp participant, scored his first points of the tournament with an unassisted two-point goal.

With 3:51 left to play, Orlando scored their only goal of the game. Forward Felipe Lawall put a two-point goal past netminder Angelo Berger, a training camp participant, bringing the score to 11-2.
