Ignition captures first place with 14-7 victory

(Southfield, Mich., March 16, 2007) - The Detroit Ignition (16-10) moved to first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings with a 14-7 victory over the defending League Champion Baltimore Blast (15-10) at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, MI on Friday. The game-winning goal, a two-pointer, was tallied by Kyt Selaidopoulos at 1:15 of the second quarter of play. Defender Droo Callahan led all scorers with six points, registering one three-point goal, one two-point goal, and an assist for the soccer cycle. Detroit celebrated St. Patrick's Day by wearing one-of-a-kind green Ignition jerseys to be auctioned off for charity. The Ignition plays host to the California Cougars on Friday, March 23 at Compuware Sports Arena. Game time for the Ignition Cougars game is set at 7:35 pm ET and will be broadcast live on Comcast Local.

Ignition defender Droo Callahan put Detroit up early with a two-point goal at 1:20 to hand the first-year club the early 2-0 advantage. Callahan registered his second goal of the night, a three-pointer at 10:14 to give Detroit the 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Detroit forward Mike Apple kept the momentum going for the Ignition with a two-point goal off a pass from Jamar Beasley, putting the Ignition up 7-0 at 9:37 of the second quarter. Baltimore forward Machel Milwood finally put the defending champion Blast on the board with a two-point goal at 14:18 as the Ignition finished the first half with a 7-2 lead.

Ignition midfielder Kyt Selaidopoulos started off the third quarter's scoring with a Detroit goal, a two-pointer, 1:15 as the club's advantage stretched to 9-2. Blast forward Denison Cabral beat Ignition netminder Sanaldo with a three-point tally at 11:59 as the Detroit lead slipped to 9-5. Jonathan Steele brought Baltimore even closer with a two-point restart goal at 13:08 as the Ignition lead fell to just 9-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Detroit forward registered his thirteenth goal of the season, a two-pointer, at 8:12 of the fourth quarter to give the Ignition a little breathing room with an 11-7 advantage. League leading scorer Jamar Beasley buried a long three-point goal against the sixth attacker to hand the Ignition the 14-7 victory and first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League.

Ignition goalkeeper Sanaldo (12-9) minded the net and earned the victory for the Ignition...Defender Droo Callahan registered six points consisting of one three-point goal, one two-point goal, and an assist...The Ignition wore green jerseys in the organizations celebration of St. Patrick's Day. The jerseys will be auctioned off for charity over the next two home games.
