Iggys Even Series With Convincing Win In Austin

March 23, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Antonio Iguanas News Release

Austin, Texas - The San Antonio Iguanas evened up their best-of-five series with Austin tonight with a 5-2 victory in front of 5,373 fans in the Travis County Expo Center. The Iggys used goals from five different scorers, great goaltending by Brent Belecki and an impressive power play that connected three times.

The Iguanas jumped on the board first when Jonathan DuBois scored on a terrific pass from Mark DeSantis. The goal was followed just over a minute later with an unassisted goal by Greg Gatto. Both first period tallies by the Iguanas came with each team short a man. For both DuBois and Gatto, the goals marked their first of the postseason.

With the score 2-0 in the second period, the Iguanas flexed their muscles on the power play scoring on a Scott Green blast at the 8:00 mark of the period and following that up 39 seconds later with a Ken Richardson goal. Green's score came with the Iguanas on a 5on 3 man advantage, while Richardson's came on the more conventional 5 on 4 advantage.

The Iggys led 4-0 after two periods with Belecki a perfect 22 for 22 in the shots/saves department.

Austin finally got on the board at the 8:34 mark of the third period when Darryl McArthur scored his first goal of the post season making it 4-1 in favor of the Iguanas. Henry Kuster would answer McArthur's goal with his first of the post season reclaiming the four-goal lead for San Antonio with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. The Ice Bats would add one more mark on Dan Price's power play goal, his first of the playoffs, cutting the lead to 5-2 which is where it would stand.

Austin finished on top of the Iguanas on the shot board outshooting San Antonio 39-32 but Belecki would make 37 saves in the game, while Austin's Bryan McMullen stopped 27 of the 32 shots he faced.

San Antonio ended the night an impressive 3 for 5 on the power play, while Austin went 1 for 5 giving them power play goals in each of the first two games in this series.

Play got a little physical at the end of regulation when 62 of the game's 114 penalty minutes were dished out including misconducts to Mark DeSantis and Ken Richardson and a game misconduct for leaving the penalty box to Clay Awe.

The victory for San Antonio evens up their bext-of-five series at one game apiece with game three slated for Friday night (March 29) in the Bat Cave. San Antonio will host game four in Freeman Coliseum on Saturday, March 30th with face-off scheduled for 7:05.
