IFL Expands Playoffs
Published on January 15, 2008 under Intense Football League (Intense) News Release
GALVESTON - The road to the Intense Bowl IV is now a week longer. That's because the Intense Football League's playoffs were extended by one round.
That was one of the decisions made at the IFL's league meeting this weekend in Galveston.
The move means a total of six teams will advance to the postseason. In the league's first three years, only four teams advanced, which meant a team would reach the league's championship game by winning a playoff game. Under the revamped playoff system, the top two seeds will have a first round bye. The remaining four teams will play, and the winners will advance to semifinal playoff games against the No. 1 and 2 seeded teams.
"Adding two more teams to our playoffs and extending the playoffs by another round is great for our league," IFL president Chad Dittman said. "It's going to give more teams an opportunity to play in the postseason. It's also going to make our playoffs even more competitive than before."
The first round of the playoffs is set for the July 5 weekend. The semifinal round will follow a week later, and the Intense Bowl will be played July 19. The team entering the championship with the best record hosts the Intense Bowl.
Also coming out of the league meeting was the announcement of this year's IFL All-Star Game being played at Lake Charles, La. Saturday, Aug. 9. Last year's all-star game was played at the Central Pavilion Arena at the Richard M. Borchard in Robstown.
With the addition of a new franchise in Fairbanks, Alaska, each IFL team will play a 14 game regular season schedule. A record number of nine teams will be competing in a total of 64 games between March 1 and June 28. The season is followed by a two-round playoff in early July. The IFL season begins Saturday, March 1 when the San Angelo Stampede-Express travels to North Dallas to take on the Frisco Thunder.
