Icehawks Winning Streak Snapped In Dayton

DAYTON, OH - The Dayton Gems rebounded from a third period comeback by the Port Huron Icehawks on Sunday to defeat Port Huron for the first time this season in seven games, 4-2.

Down by two to open the third period the Icehawks rallied in an effort to extend a five game winning streak. Tab Lardner scored on a power play at 7:47 from Brandon Naurato and Daniel Tetrault to cut the deficit to one. Mike Gershon then tied the game at 11:01 on a helper from Mickael Bedard.

The Gems, however, were able to recover and retake the lead when AJ MacLean tipped in a shot from John Snowden at 13:30. Nathan Oke also had an assist. Snowden rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal at 19:48 from MacLean. Dayton had nine shots and Port Huron had eight in the period.

Dayton's Mike Vaskivou broke a scoreless tie just 1:00 into the second period, scoring on a two-on-one pass from Snowden. Phil Youngclaus also had an assist. Chris Myhro added to Dayton's lead at 12:52 when he tapped his own rebound in to finish off another odd man break. Dan Lapointe and Bryan Nathe assisted the goal, giving Dayton a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Shots in the second period favored the Gems 17-9.

The first period ended in a scoreless tie as Dayton's Derek MacIntyre made eight saves and Port Huron's Adam Russo turned away six shots. For the game Dayton held a 32-25 edge in shots, with Russo making 28 saves and MacIntyre stopping 23.

The Icehawks, who moved into sole possession of first place in the IHL with a win over the Muskegon Lumberjacks yesterday, again find themselves sharing the top spot as the Lumberjacks won tonight in Flint.

Port Huron continues a five game road trip on Wednesday with a stopover in Bloomington. The Icehawks will return home on Friday, January 15 to face the same Gems.
