Icehawks Skate To 7-4 Victory Over Gems

DAYTON, OH - The Port Huron Icehawks earned a 7-4 victory over the Dayton Gems on Sunday at Hara Arena. The win is the fourth in a row over the Gems for the Icehawks, who snapped Dayton's season best winning streak at three games.

Port Huron special teams dominated the third period and allowed the Icehawks to pull away in a one goal game. Daniel Tetrault opened the final period with a power play goal just 20 seconds into the frame. Mickael Bedard assisted on the goal to give Port Huron a 5-3 lead. Derek Patrosso followed with another power play goal at 6:52, boosting the score to 6-3. Tetrault and Nick Lindberg had assists, with Lindberg's assist marking his third helper of the night.

Tim Hartung drew the Gems to 6-4 with his second goal of the game from Corey Couturier and Nathan Oke at 13:57, but Port Huron's Adam Maccarone sealed the win when he fired a center shot into an empty net at 18:29. The goal was the first of Maccarone's career and a shorthanded effort. Dayton outshot Port Huron 10-7 in the third period.

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined to score seven goals in the second period. Port Huron opened the barrage with back-to-back goals 46 seconds apart. Brandon Naurato fired a high wrist shot into the goal at 2:02, ending a Gems shutout streak. Jason Selleke and Tab Lardner picked up the assists. Kerry Bowman backhanded a rebound into the net at 2:48 to make it 2-0 Port Huron. Maccarone and Lindberg had assists on the play.

Dayton broke through at 10:43 when Sam Bloom scored from Mike Vaskivuo and Jonathon Ornelas. The Icehawks struck back, however, and opened up a 4-1 lead on goals from Cory Stillman at 12:11 and Tab Lardner at 15:04. Bedard and Patrosso assisted on the first goal, a one timer by Stillman from above the right face-off circle. Lindberg and Kevin Hansen assisted on Lardner's goal, a slap shot from the left circle.

The Gems Tim Hartung scored just 35 seconds after the Lardner goal to cut it to 4-2. Derek Parker and Couturier assisted. Sam Bloom then scored his second goal of the period shorthanded from Nathan Oke at 18:59 to make it 4-3 after 40 minutes. Port Huron outshot Dayton 16-6 in the period.

The Icehawks outshot the Gems 37-23 for the victory. Icehawks goalie Adam Russo earned the win with 19 saves on 23 shots, while Gems netminder Derek MacIntyre made 30 saves on 36 shots. The Icehawks were 2-5 on the power play and killed off five penalties to hold the Gems scoreless on the power play.

Port Huron concludes a six game road trip on Wednesday in Fort Wayne. The Icehawks and Komets are tied for second place in the IHL with identical 12-6-1-0 records.
