Icehawks Kick Off Three Game Week With Trip To Muskegon

November 17, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks continued their hot start to the 2009-10 season last week, going 2-1-0-0 to maintain the International Hockey League's highest winning percentage. They will look to build on that momentum as they play three games this week.

The Icehawks (8-3-0-0) are currently in third place in the league with 16 points, but remain within striking distance of the top spot. They are just two points out of first and have one game in hand on second place Muskegon and two games in hand on first place Bloomington.

The team travels to Muskegon this Wednesday in search of revenge against the Lumberjacks, the only team to beat the Icehawks twice this season. Two of the Icehawks three losses this season have come at the hands of Muskegon.

The Icehawks will then return home to host both of the IHL's expansion teams. The Icehawks will play the Quad City Mallards for the first time on Friday. On Saturday, the Icehawks will look to remain undefeated versus the Dayton Gems. They are currently 2-0-0-0 against the Gems this season.

Nailbiters: The Icehawks beat Flint 2-1 Sunday night, improving to a league-best 4-0-0-0 in one-goal games this season. In each of these wins, Port Huron's game-winning goal has come in the third period or later, with one shootout win contributing to their record.

One-Sided Rivalry: The Icehawks swept a home and home series with the Flint Generals last weekend to improve to 4-0-0-0 versus their rival this season.

Firing Away: Mike Kinnie netted two more goals over the weekend, putting him in a first-place tie with Muskegon's Robin Bouchard for the league lead with ten apiece. Although his eight-game point streak was snapped Sunday night, Kinnie still leads the league in shots (61) and power play goals (5). The Icehawks also lead the league in average shots per game, firing over 33 shots per game at opposing goalies.

No Advantage: The Icehawks continued their stingy defense on the penalty kill this weekend. They continue to lead the league, killing 90% of all penalties this season. Their five power play goals allowed leads the league.

Roster Moves: Icehawks defenseman Jason Selleke saw his first action of the season last weekend after beginning the year on the Injured Reserve list. He had an assist and a +/- rating of +2 in two games. In other roster moves, forward Mike Bray was placed on 14-Day IR. He joins defenseman Rob Cowan (30-Day, 11/02/09) on the Injured Reserve list. Defenseman Nick Rolls was placed on waivers on Thursday.

Road Trip: Following Saturday night's game against Dayton, the Icehawks will embark on a six-game road trip. They will not play another game at McMorran Arena until Friday, December 11 against Muskegon.

Upcoming Promotions:

Friday, Nov. 20 vs. Quad City, 7:30 p.m. - A new Chuck-A-Duck promotion debuts when the Mallards come to town.

Saturday, Nov. 21 vs. Dayton, 7:30 p.m. - Celebrate Thanksgiving with a fun and unique game of turkey bowling! Three fans will get a chance to participate during intermission.
