
Icehawks fall to Komets, remain in first place

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks fell victim to a solid Fort Wayne defense on Friday and were defeated 3-1 in front of 2,142 fans at McMorran Arena.
The Icehawks outshot the Komets 13-6 in the first period and 35-25 overall, but were thwarted by a 34 save performance from Fort Wayne goaltender Nick Boucher.
The two teams emerged from the first period tied at one. Fort Wayne's Rick Varone scored at 3:11 to give his team the early advantage. He was assisted by Sean O'Connor and Rod Aldoff. The Icehawks tied the contest when Nick Lindberg notched his 25th goal of the season with just four seconds left to play in the frame. The marker came on the power play and was assisted by Jamie Lovell and Jamie Carroll.
The game was then scoreless until Fort Wayne's Olivier Legault netted his 4th goal of the season at 5:06 in the third period to put his team back on top. He was assisted by Varone and Danko Mironovic. Nine minutes later, the Komets took a two goal lead with a tally by Mathieu Curadeau. Guy Dupuis assisted on the play.
Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling made 22 saves. The Icehawks were 1-6 on the power play and the Komets were 0-3.
With the loss, the first place Icehawks dip to 36-18-5-2 on the International Hockey League season yet maintain a three point lead over the second place Muskegon Lumberjacks, who lost tonight at Flint. The third place Komets improve to 32-17-3-8 and now sit just one point behind Muskegon and only four points out of first.
Tonight's game was the second in a five game home-stand for Port Huron. The stretch continues with a visit from Flint on Saturday and a showdown with Muskegon on Sunday. For Sunday's game, walk-up tickets are just $5 for kids 14-and-under and seniors 62-and-over. A Skate with the Players event will also be held following the contest.

Game Notes: The defeat marked the first time the Icehawks have lost back-to-back games in regulation since January 16 and 17...With a goal tonight, Lindberg extended his goal streak to three games (3g) and his point streak to four games (3g, 4a)...With the loss, Sterling saw his winning streak snapped at five and his unbeaten streak halted at seven.
