Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA -The Louisiana IceGators (8-33) returned to the ice on Saturday night against the Augusta Riverhawks (20-17). This was the Riverhawks first trip to the Dome. With the Swamp People in attendance the âGators saw a two-goal lead slip away and fall to the Riverhawks 7-5.
The first period began with each team dropping the gloves. Matt Auffrey (AUG) and Eric Tallent (LOU) got into a fight 50 seconds into the first period. This set the mood for the IceGators throughout the first two periods. The âGators then had six unanswered shots on goal before the first Riverhawks shot on goal. However, Augusta's first shot on goal was by Travis Dunstall (AUG) and it put the Riverhawks on the board first. Augusta added to their lead with 2:32 left in the period when Egor Mironov (AUG) scored his 15th goal of the season and put the Riverhawks up 2-0. Louisiana quickly responded with 1:36 left in the period when Jason Hill (LOU) scored to cut the Riverhawks lead in half.
The second period began with Augusta's Branden Kosolofsky getting in a fight shortly after the period began. Kosolofsky got into another fight this time with Tanner Hlookoff (LOU) with 11:18 left in the period and was given a game misconduct. Louisiana quickly responded when Hill scored his second goal of the game. With the game tied at 2-2, Travis Dunstall (AUG) pushed the puck past IceGators' goalie, Archie Henderson, to give the Riverhawks a 3-2 lead. With less than 8:00 left in the period the âGators began to make their push. Cameron Sault (LOU) scored his 6th goal of the season. About three minutes later Hill finished off the hat trick and put the âGators ahead for the first time in the game. Shawn McNeil (LOU) finished off the four-goal period with 35 seconds left in the period.
The âGators began the third period up 5-3 and looking to finish game. Augusta had a different idea. Luke Lucyk (AUG) scored his 4th goal of the season less than 2:00 into the period. Less than a minute later the IceGators' lead was gone when Curtis Megginson (AUG) scored his 4th goal of the season. With a 5-5 tie, the Riverhawks' Egor Mironov scored and put Augusta up with 8:43 left in the game. Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn (LOU) and Sault put together several good attempts but could not even the game. Augusta would add an insurance goal with 21 seconds left when Lucas LaBelle (AUG) scored an empty net goal to win 7-5.
"We have not learned how to finish," answered IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski. "We play so hard for two period but don't finish in the final period."
